Foreach rewind in Perl

Foreach rewind in Perl 05/03/2004 01:47 PM
I ran into a situation this weekend where I needed a Perl equivalent of PHP's reset(), rewinding the pointer in an array being iterated over with foreach to the first element in the array. I was disappointed to find there isn't such a beast.

Specifically what I had need of was to alter an array in the midst of its being foreached, hopping back to the first element and foreaching all over again from the beginning. Here's a simplistic example:

my @array = (1,2,3,4);

my $ii = 0;

foreach my $element ( @array ) {
  print $element;
  ++$ii == 2 and @array = (5,6,7,8);
}
What I was hoping, albeit naively, for was: 125678. What I got, intriguingly, was: 1278. While the element switch in @array was indeed being noticed, the foreach pointer was continuing on with the third element, now 7 and on through 8.

So I thought to give my pal shift a try instead, its event horizon only one element out and knowing nothing of the array pointer stuff foreach keeps in its head. Here's that simplistic example again:

my @array = (1,2,3,4);

my $ii = 0;

while ( my $element = shift @array ) {
  print $element;
  ++$ii == 2 and @array = (5,6,7,8);
}
This worked nicely, producing: 125678.

I thought I'd feed this to Google just in case it proved useful to anyone else googling fruitlessly for: perl equivalent of PHP's reset()

JVC "Rewind Be!" Wind-Up Cord Headphones

JVC "Rewind Be!" Wind-Up Cord Headphones 09/01/2004 01:19 PM

jvc_wind.gif imageThe Japan Victor Corporation (known to us as simply JVC) has announced some new earphones dubbed "Rewind Be!", which allow for the cable itself to be wound up inside of the housing.

Sure, you don't give a damn, especially because these are Japan only (for now). Well, these are the "world's thinnest" headphones with a wind-up cable, and they only cost about $18 USD. But I like wind-up things, so you're going to have to deal.

On Yahoo's Google Ads

On Yahoo's Google Ads 06/08/2004 10:30 AM
My thoughts, not those of my employer... The folks at Search Engine Lowdown say: Not a smart move on Yahoo's part, they are advertising on Google. Why isn't it smart. Let's see, could it be because they are giving their biggest competitor a thumbs-up just before Google intends to raise umpteen-billion dollars? Oh, please... "Not a smart move" huh? Let's think about that a bit. First, the way Google's ad program works, if people don't click the ads frequently enough,...

Yahoo's Web Bugs: How to Opt Out

Yahoo's Web Bugs: How to Opt Out 05/11/2004 01:22 PM

A reader alerts me to Yahoo's use of Web Bugs, invisible files that let the company track a variety of behavior "inside and outside our network of web sites and in connection with Yahoo! products and services." Yahoo says no personally identifying information is collected, but since it knows who you are when you're doing email, that's a distinction without a difference, I think. Anyway, here's a page where you can opt out. Yahoo calls them "Web Beacons," a rhetorical trick. Note that you have to do it for each browser you use, and the browsers have to accept cookies. Also note that when you opt out you get a page that makes it all to easily to inadvertently opt back in. Be careful. For more information on web bugs, see this page by Richard Smith.

Enterprise Software No Longer Yahoo's
Cup Of Tea
10/31/2003 06:18 PM
Remember when "enterprise portals" were a big deal? Back when Yahoo was struggling to figure out where they were going to make money as the online advertising market took its (temporary) hiatus, they had this vision of taking their "portal" technology and bringing it to the enterprise. They made a big splash about it when it launched, but you didn't hear much about it after that. That's probably because not too many people were interested. Now, Yahoo has announced that they' re shutting down the division and getting on with their life as a consumer play. They say they'll still be selling some enterprise products, with a focus on enterprise instant messaging, but it's certainly not going to be a big part of their business.
