Apple's Strategy A Familiar Tune

Apple's Strategy A Familiar Tune 08/16/2004 04:37 AM
With more competitors jumping into the market, the question is whether Apple will be able to keep its dominance in the portable music player market or whether the iPod will eventually go the way of the firm's Macintosh business. By Matthew Yi, San Francisco Chronicle (via MyAppleMenu)

Apple's iPod Strategy Is Familiar Tune

Apple's iPod Strategy Is Familiar Tune 04/26/2004 08:52 AM
It's unclear that working with Real and other music services would boost iPod sales. Googoo-eyed iPod users do not begin their testimonials by saing, "music downloads changed my life," or "I can't live without my MP3s." What they say is iPod, iPod, iPod. Apple's DLA strategy

Apple's DLA strategy 07/26/2004 11:07 PM

Apple just announced a new iTunes mobile version that Motorola will load onto their "mass-market music phones" in the first half of next year. TheFeature's Carlo Longino gives his quick take on the deal:

Plenty of handsets today are capable of playing mp3s, but presumably none do it with the ease and grace -- or inherent coolness -- of Apple's products. It's an interesting move for Apple, which has said in the past the iTunes music store is a loss leader designed to help sell iPods. Presumably, they want to take new Moto phone users and turn them into iPod buyers... That, or this is just the first step towards the much-clamored-for wireless iPod.

Marc's bit.....

See! I told you so!

You think Apple still thinks of themselves as a computer company? I doubt it. They've been milking the Mac and their users for years and they're about to launch their entirely new model - which will be based upon enabling people's digital lifestyles.

Music is just the first step. And creativity.

You'll soon see .Mac and Rendevouz play a big part in Apple's comprehensive solution for the digital convergence. Shared calendars for the family, tied into your vacation albums and home movies. Throw in nutrional guides, pick-up and drop-off schedules and after-school activities - and we'll finally have iCommunity.

Apple is showing the world - right now - that end-user's experiences actually DO count.

That's why the Mac was always the best and why the iPod is the best. They're doing our R&D for us!

I have been in torture photos, too. Gerry Adams speaks out. "News of the ill-treatment of prisoners in Iraq created no great surprise in republican Ireland. We have seen and heard it all before. Some of us have even survived that type of treatment. Suggestions that the brutality in Iraq was meted out by a few miscreants aren't even seriously entertained here. We have seen and heard all that before as well. But our experience is that, while individuals may bring a particular impact to their work, they do so within interrogative practices authorised by their superiors."

People are beginning to notice. There have been lots of little signs creeping up on everyone, and suddenly you look around and it feels like Silicon Valley is booming again. Companies are doing well. There's lots of hype - and where there's hype, there's venture capital cash. Of course, this time around everyone claims they've learned their lessons from 1999, but just wait and see what a few hot IPOs will do to selectively erase some memories.

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth
Tracking
05/12/2004 12:42 PM
Intel Research looks at tracking people you see all the time, but don't know, via Bluetooth: Mark Frauenfelder writes about Intel's Jabberwocky, which explores your relationship with other people, including what are called familiar strangers: people who you don't know, but recognize because you see them regularly. The first instantiation is a Bluetooth application that tracks the Bluetooth IDs it sees. The more frequently you see certain IDs, the more familiar the program marks them. When you're surrounded by actual strangers (or their strange Bluetooth devices), you'll see a different display than when you're near people you see often but don't know. Once and if everyone is carrying Bluetooth devices, perhaps you could use this tool as a way to avoid detection. Private detectives will have to learn to turn off Bluetooth features to avoid showing up as known parties. Trying to avoid colleagues at work? Los Angeles Times - ZARQA, Jordan — The town that would give Abu Musab Zarqawi his notorious moniker is a hard place — treeless and tough, cinder-block apartment houses punctuated by drab mosques. They say you have to be a thug to make it in the streets here, and the young Zarqawi had all the credentials: He ran with a fast crowd, fought easily and covered his skin with tattoos.

AP - These are troubled times. As geopolitical turmoil mounts across the globe, essentials such as homeland security hang in the balance. Gas prices spiral upward of $7 per gallon as the United States falls deeper out of favor with oil producing nations — and others. Reality or video game? It's a close call as Atari's "Act of War: Direct Action" ($50, rated T) strikes an extremely familiar chord.
