A solution for Hollywood cake crackdowns

A solution for Hollywood cake crackdowns
and piñata busts?
06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Xeni Jardin: Among the many colorful solutions proposed by Boing Boing readers to reports of I.P. enforcements against small-time cake bakers and piñata stuffers who fashion kids' goodies without license:
Here's an idea for the Disneys of the world: include a single-use license coupon with every DVD/CD/stuffed animal/whatever sold to the consumer. They would give have this coupon filled out by the business that is making the potentially infringing item--cake, piñata, decoratively carved watermelon--which can then be sent in, just like your standard registration card.

Offer monthly drawings for prizes. Indemnify businesses for custom items thus licensed.

Offer special licenses for businesses with a high number of "referrals" by these coupons. Security features could include serialized bar-codes or RFIDs. Everybody wins. Kids get to eat (or bash) anthropomorphized fish; parents get to have some peace (though no necessarily quiet); small businesses can keep doing what they do without having to hire an IP lawyer for every other order; trademark holders get another means to track and target customers; and most importantly, trademark holders get to maintain, if not increase customer good will.

It's not rocket science. Sigh.

Disney busts amateur Disneyland tour

Disney busts amateur Disneyland tour
guide
03/22/2005 05:01 PM
Cory Doctorow: Jim Hill is one of the great Disnephiles and Disney bloggers of the planet. Among other things, he gives a regular tour of Disneyland to people who pay him to show them around and tell them the inside story of the park (there are tons of tour operators who show people around Disney parks -- often escorting large groups from other countries). This weekend, Disney security stopped and threatened to arrest Jim for giving his tour.
I'm serious, folks. 20 minutes into my 2 o'clock tour, I was suddenly interrupted by two officials from the park's security staff. They quietly pulled me aside and said that they'd had complaints about my tour. That they'd heard that I was saying negative things about their theme park. More importantly, that my JHM tour was somehow undercutting Disneyland Guest Relations' ability to sell its own tours of the theme park.

Needless to say, I was somewhat surprised by this reaction. As were the 10 or so people who were taking my 2 o'clock tour and watching all of this unfold from 5 feet away. I mean, yes, the JHM Disneyland tour does contain a few juicy stories. Which is why Chuck Oberleitner once called it "The 'E' True Hollywood version of Disneyland's history." But is that really reason enough to shut the tour down?

My lightning go tournament in Oulu did not really go too well, even with my new shiny hair (thank you, Seppo, for the most interesting semeai/furikawari ever). Probably a combination of too much alcohol, too little rest, a slight touch of flu, and too much rank. Coming back on Saturday evening, I pretty much have have spent the past 24 hours in bed.

And I'm still more tired than what I was starting this weekend.

Still - yet I feel like I wouldn't want to trade my life for anything else right now. I'm a regular glutton for punishment :-).
