Boston-area bank suggestion? (Bank of
America is not dog-friendly)
06/22/2005 02:23 AMMy bank has been purchased, for about the fifth time.
Currently it is called "Bank of America." None of the previous
changes of ownership or name bothered me but this time the new color
scheme came with "no dogs allowed" signs in the front of every branch
office. I'm not sure that I can stomach 0.2% interest if I can't
have a dog at my side to provide some comfort as inflation and
corporate looters erode my turbine-powered helicopter fund.
Anyone have a suggestion for a dog-friendly bank in the Boston
area?

The facility is
built on the principle of crawlers that search research content from
selected central banks websites on a daily basis. The Research Hub

Beware the "wild" salmon
Beware the "wild" salmon
04/12/2005 01:47 PMThis is really disturbing: the New York Times reports that Stores Say
Wild Salmon, but Tests Say Farm Bred in several stores in New York
City.
Tests performed for The New York Times in March on salmon sold as wild
by eight New York City stores, going for as much as $29 a pound,
showed that the fish at six of the eight were farm raised. Farmed
salmon, available year round, sells for $5 to $12 a pound in the city.
Emphasis mine.
Given the contaminants found in farmed salmon, this deceptive practice
troubling for consumers trying to make informed healthy decisions. I
used to eat a lot of salmon but have really dropped the amount I eat
in the past few years. Now it's less than once a month whereas it used
to be twice a week, if not more. It's too bad because I love salmon,
but it's too difficult to determine its source, especially when
suppliers appear to be lying.

06/24/2005 08:29 PMBeware Those Evil 3G Phones
Beware Those Evil 3G Phones
06/16/2004 09:11 PMLast month, we wrote about NCH's
incredi
bly biased survey saying that parents were afraid 3G phones would be
used by pedophiles. When you looked at the way the questions were
worded, it's no surprise they got the results they did. However,
politicians seem to be taking the study seriously. Over in Ireland,
they now want to
create a
national registry of anyone who dares to buy a 3G mobile phone
just in case they turn out to be a child pornographer. They admit
that those darn GPRS/2.5G phones are a lost cause -- even though many
of them have cameras and can do just as much, just at a slower speed.
This is a typical political response to a problem. Someone puts out a
study that gets whips up people into a frenzy about an issue, and so
they come up with some sort of law that makes it look as if they're
concerned about the problem. Instead, what we have is a problem that
doesn't necessarily exist (certainly, pedophiles could end up using 3G
phones, but they can also use the internet, or a regular camera or
whatever) and put together a solution that will be expensive, but
won't actually do anything to deal with the elements of the problem.
As the article points out, someone who intends to use the phone for
such purposes will simply give false info, or borrow someone else's
phone. The only people this will really impact are tax payers who
will have to pay to implement this registry.

10/29/2003 01:15 AMI tried and tried, but I just couldn't resist linking to this parody:
"Confirming their intent to battle Google's new Blogger
service, MT then announced on its TypePad site that the it would be
rendering all of its users' posts in image format- meaning that any
blog hosted by the TypePad service would be immune to Google's awesome
searching reach, because the blog entries would actually be images,
rather than text ... Taking the incredible step to block your users'
access to and from Google, the de-facto clearinghouse and meetinghouse
of the Web, is a bold and almost paranoid move for MovableType to make
in a war that hasn't even begun (neither the new Google-powered
Blogger, nor MT's new TypePad sevice, have yet to launch). It's as if
MT has forgotten how precarious their strong hold is over such a
fickle group of fans."
For reference, the author was referring to this
dollarshort.org post, which, I assume could have only benefitted
from a "THIS IS A JOKE" disclaimer.
The confusion over my feeble attempts at humor has spurred us to
create the <$MTJoke$> tag, which from this moment on, is a required
Movable Type tag to be used when indicating sarcasm, gentle ribbing,
playful jests and half-truths.

spam has made spammers realize that to get past Bayesian spam
filters, they shouldn't just paste in the

from classic pieces of literature, but instead just toss in

quite likely that the reason these get through more effectively than
other types of text is because so many people bombard their friends
with stupid jokes as friend spam.

04/11/2004 12:28 AMVia Wonkette, here's a slightly unfair

Bush's jokes about weapons of mass destruction. Media is in the
hands of everyone, and people are going to use it to hold powerful

People seem to really be embracing web video as a
