Scott the Webmaster Returns to Scott the Search Engine Engineer

Well most of today was spent on basic webmastering, content writing and CSS stuff (and I've munged a lot of CSS -- I know it won't validate any longer).  But I just caught my breath and put in a requested feature: RSS Filtering.

Here's What a Filter Does

If you've used Roogle at all then you're starting to see that your own posts show up a lot.  That's bad (well sometimes) so I implemented a new Advanced tab which has the advanced search form with the Filter option.

Let's just say that you don't like my blog.  Then you'd enter http://radio.weblogs.c om/0103807/rss.xml in the filter field and do the search.  And this is what you'd get:

Other

Can there be more than one filter?  Not right now.

Does it remember my filter?  Not yet.

Can I filter from the search results?  Good idea (I just thought of it).  I'll get on that.

Who thought up this in the 1st place?  Well the filter concept credit goes to, well I can't remember but thank you for the idea.  Leave me a note here and I'll give you the credit and a cross link.

To take full advantage of this coverage, download an IRC client (we are recommending Conversation) and log on to irc.slashnet.org and join the channel #mercworld (a moderated channel where you can watch the announcements from our reporters) and #macmerc (an unmoderated channel where you can discuss the announcements with the other Mac fans. Any questions? Our coverage of the Expo won't end when the keynote is over. No, we have many other surprises in store for you. So get yourself set up to chat, and keep an eye on MacMerc.com for all the MacWorld Expo excitement.

Fairness: If you're presenting one side of a story, you owe it to your readers, your subjects and yourself to weigh the other side's case. So What About that "Technorati Cosmos" Scott?

I've had a flurry of requests recently asking why Feedster doesn't have a Technorati like "Cosmos".  So over the past few days, with the assistance of Mike from down under who tossed in a critical string parser, I've been implementing this.  And we're calling it your "Feedster Web".  We looked at the whole Nebula / Galaxy / Constellation / etc but Richard Soderberg came up with "Web" and that one stuck.  Now while the final code may not be ready until after Gnomedex (there's one bug that makes some domains non-"webbable"), I thought I'd at least give you a preview so you can tell me if we're on track.

See Feedster Web Demo

Please leave comments on this blog entry and I'll see if we can, well, accommodate them.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge 06/17/2005 07:13 PM

For most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the Creative Suite 2 applications.

In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.

It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like iPhoto's.

Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way to find out...
