bumping up Pages (the word processor for the rest of us) and Keynote
(the presentation program for Steve Jobs's keynote addresses, and, you
know, the rest of us who would prefer to not use PowerPoint). The
sparse notes accompanying the updates point to issues "that may
have affected reliability for some customers". The Pages update
also fixes a problem when deleting entire pages. Both updates are
available now via Software Update; Pages 1.0.1 is a 28.3 MB download;

Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PMThe moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP
SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias
Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's
not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects
any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800
hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire
cable".
RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't
really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an
existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it
is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying
to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he
said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface
800.

04/12/2005 11:55 AMSiK Inc. on Tuesday introduced the ram din, a portable line-out and
FireWire adapter for Apple's iPod, iPod photo and iPod mini. The
device connects to the Dock Connector found on the bottom of these
devices and provides two breakout seven inch cables. Line-level audio
output is provided through a right angle 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo plug,
and the other cable terminates in a six-pin female FireWire 400
connector. SiK claims the ram din is useful for iPod users who want to
connect their player to an external headphone amplifier or other
device with line input, and power the device using FireWire as needed.
The ram din is available in black or white and costs US$21.95.
