Notes from Microsoft

Notes from Microsoft

Notes from Microsoft 06/23/2004 09:30 AM

I talked to two groups at Microsoft yesterday: the Web publishers across all of Microsoft's departments, and Microsoft Research. With the publishers, I talked in a cluetrainy way about the rise of voice and conversation in world that's been dominated by a broadcast model of marketing. To the Research group, I talked about how our insistence in thinking of everything as information (hint: DNA is not information) leads us to miss the importance of the unspoken. (Hmm. Both topics sound rather stupid when I put them like that, and possibly they were.) During the Q&A at the publishing group session...

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

NetBeans Notes

NetBeans Notes 06/17/2005 04:39 PM

Item: For those of you who migrated from Emacs, you can easily teach NetBeans control-F/B/N/P/U/D: go to Tools - Options - Editor Settings - Global Key Bindings. Huge time-saver, and this should be the default on OS X, since basically every other text control has those bindings wired in. Item: I upgraded all at once to OS X 1.4, and Java 1.5, and NB 4.1 (from a release candidate), and a lot of JXTA libraries, and things are slowing down. I don’t like this; in particular I hit control-space for autocomplete or F9 for compile and it sometimes has to think for a second first, which is nuts. [Update: Fixed it! I had stupidly put all the support libraries that JXTA needs to run into the compile-time list, so they were going on the classpath. Take ’em all out and it’s back to nearly instant.] Item: Project Coyote is coming along nicely, and it’s increasingly obvious that dynamic languages on the JVM are going to be huge. Item: NetBeans Day at Java One looks like it’ll be serious fun. Item: (This is not NB-specific.) When I go grab a new API, it’s just way too much work to tell the IDE about it and get the jars and Javadocs in place. There ought to be a standard way to package a Java API so that you can point your IDE at some URI and it All. Just. Happens. Item: Here’s a nice feature, does any IDE have it? When I say

Ziggarut z = new Ziggarut(bricks, stones);

then the IDE should figure out that that’s a com.textuality.3d.Ziggarut and insert the appropriate import statements for me, it’s a total waste of time for me to go poking around trying to remember where that was. [Oops: NetBeans has “Fix imports”, Eclipse is pro-active about suggesting it, and the IDEA cult assured me (as usual) that they have something even better.]

IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not
Really.

IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not
Really.
04/07/2005 05:29 AM
As Lotus Notes steadily loses share to Microsoft Exchange, people are seeing similarities to Lotus 1-2-3's loss of share to Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Exchange is outselling Lotus Notes by a large margin, and the only reason Notes still has a hold is because of its entrenched install base. Today, all but one of the top analyst firms recognize Exchange as the leading email product. Yet, IBM and its Lotus Notes consultants still continue to claim that they are the "best selling" email product on the market. Sure, it's marketing spin (and thanks to Gartner, it's not entirely false), but Forbes is missing the point (and watching too much Monty Python). IBM is milking as much revenue from what it already deems a dying product. IBM is strategically doubling down on its services businesses and getting out of businesses that it deems not core to this goal (lapto ps, anyone?). Their willingness to exit a commoditized, competitive email software market in favor of growing other, more lucrative parts of their business is actually a good display of discipline. IBM is not hiding their head in the sand on this one -- they correctly recognize that the holy grail isn't email software.

Taking notes

Taking notes 08/16/2004 08:25 AM
How do people take notes these days? I've poked around this list of outliners and note takers but nothing seems to do exactly what I want. But my needs are pretty simple and pretty common, so surely somewhere there's a piece of software that'll help. I'd like an outliner. It doesn't even have to be very sophisticated. As I read a source, I want to type in brief notes that I can stick into that outline, with some notes stored in multiple places. I only want to type in the bibliographic information once, so it needs some way of annotating...
