AP - For 35 years, the words "miss subways" had nothing to do with being late for work or nostalgia among expatriate New Yorkers. The words referred to the eager young women who hoped their photos on subway placards would be tickets to modeling careers or even Hollywood.

"There is no benefit to any individual player improving their valuation metrics. Let's say that I decided that I should use fundamental analysis (and overcame the uncertainty issues involved). If my calculations came out lower than the simple metrics everybody else was using, I would get shut out of the deal. Since the buyers are also using those metrics when buying, I would be shut out of a potential profit as well."

New York Subway Musicians go to Korea... 12/16/2003 02:57 PM
New York Subway Musicians go to Korea (from ArtsJournal.com)... And they can stay there, as far as I’m concerned. When you’re an out-of-towner, or just use the subway once a year, buskers are so quaint and picturesque. But if you’re a commuter who rides the subway every day of your life, they are stupendous annoyance, preventing you from concentrating on your reading, and generally adding to irritating cacaphony of an already inhuman environment. The subway is not some cute audition club for aspiring mimes. As Serious Danger points out, "approximately one in seven people waiting on your train platform is a face-slasher or a gut-stabber who will cut you with scant provocation, and less warning."

York City subway
05/20/2004 10:00 AM

Tomorrow night (Thursday) at the New York Public Library there's a free lecture on The Development of the New York City Subway System that sounds interesting.

Transit Historian Peter Derrick will discuss why New York City needed an extensive rapid transit system, the political and financial difficulties in getting new lines built, and the impact the subways had on the growth of the city and the well being of its population. The focus will be on the largest stage of subway expansion, the 1913 Dual System of Rapid Transit, under which most of the existing IRT and BMT lines were constructed.

Free. From 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM.Science, Industry and Business Library, 188 Madison Avenue, New York.

Contests Abound 01/22/2004 02:29 AM

Participatory creativity is hot, hot. The Lollapoola Mash-Up Contest. Our Own GET CREATIVE! Moving Images Contest (winners to be announced next month). MoveOn.org's Bush in 30 Seconds advertisement contest. And now even the New Yorker has anno unced the winner of its own analog-version of an open-source creativity contest, which was more interactive than contests past. (Devoted New Yorker fans will want to watch the great slide show explaining the judging process.)

I don't remember the New Yorker's ever explaining the copyright policy for this. Who gets to keep the rights to the final cartoon? Can we re-use those little screwdriver or dog cut-outs for other purposes? And given that it's cut-outs we're talking about, how does first sale doctrine tie in to all this?

Clearly the average New Yorker reader -- or editor -- isn't as persnickety about their IP as some of us. Maybe next year they'll go CC.

Contests as the path to solving complex

Contests as the path to solving complex
technological problems
02/13/2004 03:48 PM
Perhaps one of the best ways to get the US economy going again is for the Government to dive into the business of contests.  Simply, cash awards to organizations that engineer and demonstrate breakthrough technology that solves specific problems.  We have seen a few minor efforts in this direction recently.  NASA has launched their "Centennial Challenges" program with $20 m for key technological breakthroughs.  DARPA is even getting into the act with a $1 m "Grand Challenge" for an autonomous ground vehicle that can navigate between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  These contests compliment the now famous privately funded X-Prize that will award $10 m to the first organization that can get 3 people to 100 km above the earth and back twice within two weeks.  What do you think about contests (or a sequence of increasingly difficult contests that build on each other) for the development of unmanned Mars missions (at much less expense than the $820 m spent on Spirit and Opportunity), extremely low cost hydrogen fuel cells, 20 hour laptop batteries that cost less than $100, and more?  In my view, a billion $$ spent this way over the next couple of years would prove true McLuhan's dictum that for every great problem there is someone that doesn't see it as a problem.

BTW: there needs to be a lot of academic work done on how to make these contests effective.

Browsing at my local library, I just came across a display of the winners of this year's Canadian Awards for Excellence in Book Design. I was blown away by the design and content of The Gryphons of Paris, a limited edition collection of black-and-white photos of surpassing beauty. This led me to the web page of the photographer, Ronald Hurwitz, his city vignettes and remarkable portraits. A good reminder that not everything of value can be found on the internet.

Brains and beauty, etc.

Brains and beauty, etc. 04/16/2004 06:27 PM
A brain study released today shows that the human ability to appreciate aesthetics is based in the prefontal cortex, part of the brain involved in decision making. The scientists at the Balearic Islands University in Spain came to this conclusion by imaging their subjects' brains while looking at art and photography. According to the study, quoted in Scientific American, "'a phylogenetic change in the prefontal cortex could give way to the decorative and artistic profusion' in humans."
Another study published today by Northwestern University suggests that "Eureka!" moments of insight activate "a distinct area in the right hemisphere of the brain's temporal cortex," a region where semantic connections occur.
"For thousands of years people have said that insight feels different from more straightforward problem solving," one of the researchers said. "We believe this is the first research showing that distinct computational and neural mechanisms lead to these breakthrough moments."
