Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

US Anti-Espionage Posters

US Anti-Espionage Posters 04/18/2005 02:56 PM
L oose lips sink ships!!!1 (There be images, some quite big here) I suspect a lot of MeFi shares my obsession with propaganda (and propaganda-style) posters, both domestic and foreign, as well as the photoshops that the Something Awful or Fark crowds generate. CoolGov has a link today to the Office of the National National Counterintelligence Executive and their Anti-Espionage poster collection. Some are great, some are almost pure propaganda, and some show how obsessed with secrecy our government has become. That lead me to Google to look for posters on the *.gov and *.mil domains. Check out the posters for "Venemous Snakes of Afghanistan and Pakistan", or what the well dressed airmen is wearing (*note the "Essentials"), posters from the NOAA telling you that "lightn ing kills", the Code of Ethics for Government Officers and Employees, and this one telling GI's why smoking could kill them.

Works Progress Administration posters

Works Progress Administration posters 09/27/2004 03:29 AM
David Pescovitz: I love the design of this vintage anti-vandalism poster. (Click on it for a larger image.) According to this site, it was part of a series printed after WWII by the Works Progress Administration. Here's more on the WPA Posters from the Library of Congress's "By the People, For the People" exhibit:
result"The By the People, For the People: Posters from the WPA, 1936-1943 collection consists of 908 boldly colored and graphically diverse original posters produced from 1936 to 1943 as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. Of the 2,000 WPA posters known to exist, the Library of Congress's collection of more than 900 is the largest. These striking silkscreen, lithograph, and woodcut posters were designed to publicize health and safety programs; cultural programs including art exhibitions, theatrical, and musical performances; travel and tourism; educational programs; and community activities in seventeen states and the District of Columbia. The posters were made possible by one of the first U.S. Government programs to support the arts and were added to the Library's holdings in the 1940s."
A reprint of this Result poster is on eBay right now, but of course I'd rather have an original. Link (Thanks, Michael-Anne!)

Copyright free antiwar posters

Copyright free antiwar posters 03/13/2003 10:24 AM
Kimberly sez: "Graphic designers nationwide are organizing to offer provocative, high-impact anti-war posters that are copyright-free and downloadable online. Participants so far include (among others) Michael Mabry, Michael Cronan, Peter Kuper, whose work appears regularly in Time and Mad, and design legend Milton Glaser, whose 'I (Heart) NY' is arguably the most referenced design in American popular culture."
"Copyright-free" means you can use this art for anything, including adding your own information to it and even printing it commercially.

Click image for full size. A mysterious epidemic of posters is reported in LA this week. We understand they bear the work of famed street artist Robbie Conal, and we know they're some sort of sneaky underground campaign for some Hot New Thing Which Shall Be Revealed Shortly, and that posters sending up Wynona, Courtney, and Moby are also in the works, but we're told we'll be sent on a one-way ride to Naked Scientology Boot Camp for extensive botox torture if we reveal their true origin and purpose. Trying to be adult

BTW, now that I don't have a TV, again,
I am for the first time in my adult...
06/21/2004 01:54 PM

Video Games are my addiction. Right now it’s SOCOM II for Playstation 2. I spend hours on it, playing with other addicts online. Someone should start a support group. BTW, I’m writing this from my laptop which might as well be surgically attached to me. I’m also outside on my back deck soaking up the sun. I love working for myself J

BTW, now that I don't have a TV, again, I am for the first time in my adult life, 100 percent drug-free. Hey, now I get to say something I've always hated when other people say it. I'm just high on life. And if you ever doubted that TV is an addiction, let me tell you, it surely is. The same thought patterns apply. My mind goes into idle, and snaps into "I'll just watch some TV" mode. Just like I used to solve problems by smoking a cigarette. Yup. Now I guess my only crutch is this laptop. Is that an addiction. Hmmm. Maybe it is an addiction, but if so it's like breathing air. I don't plan to give this one up.
