Microsoft's Most Exclusive Franchise: Included in the European Union's report on Microsoft was a memo to Bill Gates from a Microsoft executive. In it, he talks about how hard it is to move away from the Microsoft Windows API once you've started using it to build your software:

It is this switching cost that has given customers the patience to stick with Windows through all our mistakes, our buggy drivers, our high TCO, our lack of a sexy vision at times, and many other difficulties. [...] Customers constantly evaluate other desktop platforms, [but] it would be so much work to move over that they hope we just improve Windows rather than force them to move.

In short, without this exclusive franchise called the Windows API, we would have been dead a long time ago.

This harkens back to what Tim Bray said about software sharecropping last year:

Are You a Sharecropper? If you're developing software for the Windows platform, yes. Or for the Apple platform, or the Oracle platform, or the SAP platform, or, well, any platform that is owned and operated by a company. They own the ground you're building on, and if they decide they don't like you, or they can do something better with the ground, you're toast.

It's called lock-in, and one of the company's executives described how it works in a memo to Bill Gates that's part of the European Union's voluminous report (300k PDF) on why it's attempting to make our favorite monopolist behave moderately better. The executive, Aaron Contorer, told Gates:

“The Windows API is so broad, so deep, and so functional that most ISVs would be crazy not to use it. And it is so deeply embedded in the source code of many Windows apps that there is a huge switching cost to using a different operating system instead."

What this is saying is roughly as follows: Microsoft will do a great job for software developers, but it'll also make sure they can't get out once they've gotten in. The memo also says:

There's much more in the EU document, which comes on top of the U.S. case that showed repeated lawbreaking by a monopoly that has only grown stronger over time. Read it for yourself, and you'll see again the predatory nature of the world's most powerful monopoly -- a company that is resolute about not reforming its behavior. Why should it? For Microsoft, lawbreaking and lock-in are just part of the business plan, a great investment.

I'm writing this from the second floor of the Apple store on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. We spent the day with the guys from 37 Signals at The Building of Basecamp Workshop. I'm on a little iMac, and I have to admit it's impressive....the store, I mean.

Everything is clear lucite, bleached wood, and concrete. Even the stairs are translucent plastic of some kind. I gotta say — Apple has a thing for style. There's a forty seat movie theater up here, but I have no idea what it's for.

I just called Rob and left him a message that I was standing in his own, personal Nirvana. I better get out of here, actually, because some of these machines are looking really nice (but how do you live without a scroll wheel?!).

The iMac I'm on has a little camera on top of it, and it's displaying real-time video of me, but I can't figure out how to get it to take a picture. You'll just have to take my word for it that I'm actually here.

Joe and I have a pizza waiting for us at the Pizzar ia Uno on Ontario and Ohio. Gotta run.
