Searching the internet for health information can be a tricky business, especially if you're not sure where to start. Perhaps you know a friend or a neighbour who has recently been told by their GP that further tests will be undertaken ... Where do you start looking for pertinent answers or just simple reassurance if you're not familiar with this field? This has been added to Healthcare Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.

NIH Senior Health: Site Index
http://nihseniorhealt h.gov/siteindex.html

NIHSeniorHealth.gov makes aging-related health information easily accessible for adults 60 and older. It is also a useful tool for family members and friends who are seeking online health information for their older relatives. This site was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), both part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The web site is organized by health topic and currently includes information on Alzheimer's Disease, Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's, and Exercise for Older Adults. Within each topic there are sections containing general background information, open-captioned videos, short quizzes, and frequently asked questions (FAQs). Other health topics of interest to older adults will be added in the future.

I have added this to the Virtual Private Library's Subject Tracer™ Information Blog Healthcare Resources.

A Black Box For Your Health?

A Black Box For Your Health? 04/13/2004 02:10 PM
While this certainly does sound like it could be useful, it also sounds like "yet another gadget" to carry around. NASA has been working on a small device that monit ors an astronaut's vital signs and can even give some biofeedback ("calm down") to help make sure astronauts remain safe. They believe the same technology can be used in your everyday life to make sure that people remain healthy. With a wireless connection, it could constantly dump data onto a computer or upload it to a server somewhere where a doctor can monitor your health on a regular basis (and perhaps alert you if something seems out of line). I'm just hoping they build it into my mobile phone so I can avoid the "yet another gadget" problem. Also, I wonder how long until someone hacks these devices and starts "vandalizing" people's health by telling them something's wrong when there isn't a problem. If you think people are freaked out by privacy concerns over email account terms of service, just wait until their vital signs are floating through the air.

Health InterNetwork

Health InterNetwork 05/09/2004 07:18 AM
Health InterNetwork
http://www.healthinternetwor k.org/

The Health InterNetwork was created to bridge the "digital divide" in health, ensuring that relevant information - and the technologies to deliver it - are widely available and effectively used by health personnel: professionals, researchers and scientists, and policy makers. Launched by the Secretary General of the United Nations in September 2000 and led by the World Health Organization, the Health InterNetwork has brought together public and private partners under the principle of ensuring equitable access to health information. The core elements of the project are content, Internet connectivity and capacity building. As the first phase of making vital health content available, the Health InterNetwork provides here a vast library of the latest and best information on public health: more than 2,000 scientific publications, one of the world's largest collections of biomedical literature. This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide. This has been added to Healthcare Resources Subject Tracer ™ Information Blog.

Health, IT and inefficiencies

Health, IT and inefficiencies 03/22/2005 04:45 PM

Where there's money, there's opportunities.

health.jpg

One of the focus areas at PC Forum is the U.S. Health market. Needless to say many of our problems in health, are not relevant outside the U.S. - but I'm sure there's room for improvement elsewhere.

But for now - the $1.4+ Trillion market and it's absurd inefficiencies and how to solve these propblems - is what we're talking about.

Sure there's innovaton and medical advancements - but what about making sure your prescription drugs don't collide? What about getting your doctor's mindshare? Ever tried to compare health plans?

Know how much of the $1.4T is wasted? $450B. And that's just in the U.S.

As big as entertainment is - health is bigger. And just like the movement towards 'end-user' generated content is changing the face of Hollywood and media - so is the notion that patients can take care of themselves, care help each other, can tranform the health industry.

So how to empower these patients.

BTW unlike the personal publishing world - which clearly will always be a 'subset' of end-users - in the health world - we're ALL patients at one point.

One Answer = PHR (personal health records)

Another issue = only 9% of doctors actually work for a hospital.

Sweaty men like Men's Health

Sweaty men like Men's Health 06/24/2005 06:18 PM
David Pescovitz: A new study reports that the smell of male underarm funk makes men dig Men's Health magazine. In experiments run by researchers from the University of Ulster and University of Vienna, male and female subjects wore masks sprayed with either androstenol--a pheromone in men's underarm sweat--or a "control solvent." They were then shown issues of Allure, National Geographic, and Men's Health magazine. From New Scientist:
The male participants exposed to androstenol rated Men’s Health as significantly more masculine and more appealing compared with the control group. They also had a higher tendency to report that they might buy the magazine. Women appeared to be completely unaffected by the pheromone...

“This opens up the possibility of using odours to give specific emotional meaning to products – and creates ethical issues about whether this should be done if they are used at imperceptible levels,” (says University of Ulster professor Michael Kirk-Smith).
