Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

Non-Conformists Unite! 10/29/2003 12:12 AM
At long last, just what I've been looking for: C'mon, kids, let's all sign up! In case you're wondering, this comes from my new Epson Stylus CX5200 printer/copier/scanner. My old one has been making clunking noise, like a car running over a tool chest, so I figured it was time to replace it. The CX5200 prints 22/ppm of black, does 15 copies/minute, and doesn't need to go through the computer to make a copy. It cost $99 after rebates at MicroCenter. Anyone need a black cartridge and a color cartridge for an Epsson Stylus 900, a model so old that...

Unite and conquer

Unite and conquer 04/14/2004 09:15 AM
A recent commentary by Robin Miller regarding squabbling within the free software and open source communities was a useful wake-up call. This bickering is having a detrimental effect on our ability to confront those who are trying to convince policy and opinion makers against the use of free and open source software (FOSS). These challenges are neither severe nor insurmountable, but they do require the parties understand the differences between internal and external debate.

VB6 Lovers, Unite! 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Microsoft MVPs revolt: I wish them luck, but there ain't a chance Microsoft is ever going to do anything that backs away or compromises .Net in any way.

Over 100 Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) have signed an online petition that demands Redmond resume development and support of "classic" Visual Basic, a-k-a VB6. [...]

It's "basically" impossible to migrate programs written in earlier versions of Visual Basic to the .NET version. [...]

Microsoft's product managers will likely say this is not the case, and will point to migration tools and strategies the company offers. But those product managers aren't the poor bastards faced with rewriting millions of lines of source code to reinvent crucial applications, nor do the Microsofties have to swallow hard while they lose dependable business logic refined over decades.

I could see Microsoft resuming support of VB6, but development of it? No.

Blog Crawlers unite!

Blog Crawlers unite! 03/06/2004 01:50 AM

Even YOU can have your own Technorati web service!

The Internet Archive has an open source spider (and there are others - as well.)

Just imagine all the cool stuff you can 'harvest'?

Proliferation of Blog Crawlers.

The traffic to my blog has doubled in the past two months.  While some of that is due to new readers and subscribers, good part of that traffic is due to blog crawlers.  With the smell of money in the air, I am afraid we'll be seeing an explosion of blog crawlers in the near future.

How long before only a tiny fraction of the traffic is actually read by a person?  How long before the blogosphere is swamped by convenience-driven waste and greed-driven abuse?

There are 1,440 minutes in a day The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....
