How to Deal With North Korea & Q&A:

Korea?

Here are two thoughtful pieces on the North Korean Crisis.

From Foreign Affairs comes How to Deal With North Korea.

From the New York Times comes
Q&A: Should U.S. Launch Direct Talks with North Korea?

Here, by the way, is the fourth footnote from How to Deal With North Korea :

Had the Agreed Framework not been signed in 1994, the North's plutonium-based program would by today have produced enough plutonium for up to 30 nuclear weapons. Critics of the accord should not ignore this fact.

Cingular Adds Wi-Fi Roaming, EDGE Deal

Cingular Adds Wi-Fi Roaming, EDGE Deal 03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Cingular jumps into Wi-FI market with Wayport, others: The other shoe dropped. Cingular is 60 percent owned by SBC, which has the most ambitious, well-priced, and comprehensive plan of any of the telephone carriers, fixed line or wireless. And I'm not just saying that because I'm writing these words in Austin, Texas, SBC's real home territory. Cingular announced that their Wi-Fi plan will include all of Wayport's roaming network, apparently including the McDonald's locations. They also made deals with StaOnline (hotels) and Concourse (airports). Cingular took over AT&T Wireless's locations after the merger, which include Denver International Airport and northeast corridor Amtrak stations. The deal doesn't mention SBC FreedomLink, which has several thousand of its own locations now, but I would expect that to be included at some point, especially since Wayport builds and manages those locations, so integration should be trivial. And Cingular isn't reselling its locations back out to other operators or aggregators beyond those deals that are already in place. The announcement tries to focus on EDGE, the nationwide deployed 2.5G service that AT&T Wireless had completed before the merger, and was one of its gems. EDGE will eventually migrate north to UMTS and then HSDPA with much faster speeds. EDGE delivers dial-up modem or better, with rates up above 100 Kbps, but it's certainly still trumped by EVDO basic double to quadruple rate with much higher bursty rates. Which is why it's a little weird that Cingular is pricing unlimited EDGE at $80 per month with an extra $20 per month bringing you unlimited Wi-Fi at 4,000 locations. True, Cingular has the highest-speed national network with EDGE, but that's like saying, we can bring you a 4 oz. beef patty everywhere when the competitor is delivering a small but juicy steak at the same price but just in certain outlets and a 2 oz. beef patty elsewhere (1xRTT with fast dial-up speeds). There's a market decision here that might be based on appearance rather than producing demand especially since Cingular says in the press release EDGE and Wi-Fi are being sold through its business group not to general consumers....

Polaroids from the Edge

« Snapshot from Mark Maher's American Polaroids. »

I've been noticing that Polaroid SX-70 cameras and snapshots are really making a comeback. I'm not really sure why as I had one of those cameras back in the 70s and the photos were either totally weird from inappropriate colours or they would disintegrate within a few years. So I'm a little surprised to see them becoming a new retro-hip item, especially since the film is even more expensive now than it was in the 70s.

One particularly good use of the polaroid medium I've seen is Amer ican Polaroids by Mark Maher. The monologues are worth watching as the polaroid slide show is synchronized to his talking which makes for an interesting guided tour of sorts. He's an American who, if I read correctly, lives here in Helsinki and shares a lot of the same inner conflicts about the country we both used to inhabit. The snapshot of Ronald McDonald is as creepy as it is revealing. He's also thinking about what will be considered folk art in 20 or 30 years which is interesting since I usually look around and wonder what will be dug up by archaeologists far into the future and it is likely the very mundane that will survive us all. We live in the mundane and pass by the same things every day without looking at the subtle changes in it or the details it tries to convey. A photo of a grocery store aisle from the 70s is far, far more interesting than yet another artsy picture of some building somewhere. Maher does a fine job of documenting some of the more random, bizarre and utterly banal bits of America.

I also stumbled across PolaroiDiary somewhere while wandering around the web. An American expat living in Hamburg who posts, usually, a picture every day. I should write to him and explain that his passport number may be visible on the legal alien polaroid as the format requires that it be on the machine readable lines on the bottom.

And, lastly, I just found a fabulous reason to buy Kodachrome for the Lomo, a really cool lampshade! I subscribed to the first issues of ReadyMade and wasn't all that excited since its market seemed to be all the kids too young for Martha Stewart and not technical enough for Popular Mechanics with most of the projects being really impractical. This isn't very practical but it's simple and creative without being gaudy. It sure beats slide shows. :)

The edge of Orkut

The edge of Orkut 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

I just got the following message on Orkut.

Limit reached for number of friends

You have 1024 friends. You can only have up to 1000 friends. Before you can add more friends, you need to remove friends.

Partially because I was getting sick of social networks systems, partially because they were trying to be "exclusive" with invite only and partially because it was easy, I took the policy of saying yes to every friend request that didn't look like a fakester. Now I've found the edge of Orkut. According to Orkut, you can only have 1000 friends. I guess that's OK compared to the 150 or so for AIM. This error message reminds me a bit of real life. I know need to forget someone every time I meet someone I want to remember because I'm having a buffer overflow on my people recognition memory.

Now the question is... What do I do with my Orkut network now that I'm "done"?

What Can The US Do To Keep Its Tech
Edge?
04/19/2005 11:07 AM
There have been a few interesting discussions lately about the US's place in the technology world. With our supposed fall in the broadband rankings combined with US university's recent poor showing in the ACM's programming contest, a number of folks are worried that the US is losing its technology edge. There is the argument that things aren't as bad as they might appear -- and it's tough to determine the state of the entire industry on these two, somewhat random, datapoints. However, there's no reason people shouldn't at least be thinking about ways to improve US competence in the technology field. The head of the ACM suggests that a few simple changes could make a huge difference, just by showing young people that the country cares about technology. For example, he notes that schools in other countries base some of their funding wins on how well they do in the ACM contest, and the Russian winners a few years ago got to meet with President Putin -- while President Bush seems to focus on congratulating sports winners. While having the President say hi to some CS students is a nice idea, it's hardly a real plan to push tech education forward. Last year, remember all those claims from both Presidential candidates about univer sal broadband? It didn't actually do very much to stimulate broadband at all. So, politicians saying things isn't quite the same as doing things. Meanwhile, some are noticing that the real broadband competition appears to be happening in Europe, where there isn't duopoly control over access -- though, it's also not clear that many of those companies competing will be able to survive for very long. The real trick is (a) understanding how important technology is, and what it's real impact is and (b) making sure nothing is impeding competition. Right now it's not clear that the US is doing the greatest job on both of those points -- but that doesn't mean we should rush into making big changes that will cause even more trouble either.

AT&T Puts EDGE Everywhere

AT&T Puts EDGE Everywhere 11/18/2003 04:22 PM
AT&T Wireless said at Comdex today that EDGE is in 6,500 cities: EDGE is 2.5G service that extends GPRS's 10 to 50 Kpbs up to the 100 Kbps or faster range. EDGE has been gradually appearing, and Cingular had promised a full deployment probably by mid-2004. AT&T's announcement seems like a slight surprise. AT&T is offering unlimited EDGE (and by extension, GPRS in any areas that don't have EDGE support) for $80/month. A card costs $150 after rebate for a two-year service commitment. AT&T said that they'd also offer and support the Nokia 6200 EDGE phone which can be used with a laptop or as a cell phone. EDGE is available outside the U.S. on AT&T's network in Puerto Rico and Bermuda, as well as Vancouver, British Columbia. The plan is to expand throughout Canada in 2004. (As a Cingular subscriber, this is precisely the kind of thing that could get me to switch -- especially if that PC Card from Sony Ericsson has Mac OS X drivers.)...
