It might not be suitable for burning a can of franks and beans over an dangerously oversized open flame, but the Sternform mess kit is clearly a more modern solution than the wing nut-handled aluminum pots and pans of traditional Boy Scout issue. Sort of a thermal detonator for soup, the Sternform bowls have rubber tops and vacuum hollows, keeping the contents warm. Built-in magnet rims cause them to clip together, holding themselves secure in your pack or on the included strap.

Painfully, the Sternform bowls are just a concept design, so be prepared for dissapointment.

The most exciting mobile application for magnetic sensors is the capability to map an online "Yellow Pages" on top of the real world, allowing users to point their phones in the direction of a building or other public area and get information about it. For example, say you're driving down the street and see a bookstore you'd like to visit later. You could simply point your phone at the store and press a button on your phone, sending the GPS coordinates and direction information to a service that returns the operating hours and additional information about the store, along with a coupon for 10% off your purchase. If you point it at a restaurant, you could get the Zagat rating, the menu and the opportunity to make a reservation.

Exploring my new Siemens MC 60 mobile, I discovered an interesting feature. It has the ability to record small pieces of sound with its integrated microphone and store them as WAV files, so that you can use them later as personalized ring tones, etc...The recording feature made me think that I might use the mobile as a magnetic stripe reader, just like I did with computers with soundcards. After some tests I had successful results, so here is the process in case you are interested in doing the same.
