Napster Giving Away Rio Chiba, Nitrus

Napster Giving Away Rio Chiba, Nitrus
with One Year Subscription
06/17/2004 10:06 AM

free_rio_napster.jpg image

Whoa ho! Looks like the new Napster is trying a new tip, offering a free Rio Chiba Sport flash player to anyone who coughs up the $120 for a one-year subscription to the music download service. And if the 128MB Chiba isn't enough to entice you (although it can be upgraded via SD/MMC), you can pick up a Rio Nitrus, with a 1.5GB hard drive inside (not the 4GB version, I'm saying) for only $80 more (around $200). Not a great deal, if all you're interested in is the player, but if Napster has piqued your interest, it's not a bad way to go.

It's funny, though, to see Napster give away players to promote their service, when Steve Jobs maintains they keep iTunes Music Store around to sell iPods.

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...

There's a growing trend for traditionally Windows-centric software companies to release Linux versions of their products. In this review I'll take a look at what it offers and how it compares to K3b, an established Linux CD writing application.

Doom 3 Review

Doom 3 Review 08/11/2004 11:40 AM

Doom 3 one of the scariest video games ever made: I'm not much of a gamer, and I'm definately not much of a horror afficionado. I'll leave this one for those who are.

What you see in this M-rated game is definitely NOT for children or the squeamish. The vivid three-dimensional graphics, a true step forward for computer games, allow for some extremely gross death scenes involving large quantities of blood and various human and monster guts. [...]

One nice touch adds a great deal of tension: you have a flashlight that never runs out of power, but you can't use it at the same time as your weapons. [...]

Doom 3 doesn't revolutionize computer games as we know them. Rather, it polishes the horror-themed first-person shooter genre to a high gloss.

It's not going to provoke any deep thoughts or philosophical debate, but anyone looking for a good scare will enjoy this gorgeous nail-biter.

SimCity is more my speed.

MSI Mega 516BT Bluetooth MP3 Player
Reviewed
08/27/2004 01:48 PM

mega_2104full.jpg imageTrusted Reviews has taken the MSI Mega 516BT Bluetooth flash player out for a spin, yet despite a load of improvements over the previous models, like the addition of an SD/MMC expansion slot and the hard-to-miss Bluetooth, they still find it to be overall a dud. It's not that the potential isn't there. When it works, features like the ability to record calls into the player while using it as a Bluetooth headset are pretty great, but an uneven user interface and spotty success with some of the phones they tested it with make it look as if this player might be one to pass over unless you're in dire need of the handful of unique features it offers.

Wireless in music players isn't a bad idea. Why, according to The Register, even Apple thinks so.

MSI MEGA Player 515 Review 06/17/2004 10:06 AM

mis_mega_515.jpg imageTrustedReviews takes out the MSI MEGA Player 515 for a twirl -- it's the flash MP3 player that's most rememberable for its mirror-finish OLED display -- and they give it 9 humps out of 10, despite its crusty old USB 1.1 interface and only 256MB of memory. Personally, I think they're just suckers for the display, just like every other person that buys the little soap-tray of a player will have to be.

msi_528.jpgMSI has upgraded its Mega Stick 527 with the aptly-named Mega Stick 528. Available in 512MB and 1GB versions, this flash player/radio/recorder offers 18 hours of playback on a single AAA battery. It is not a beautiful looking flash player, but this is not a beautiful world. They’re aiming for the $100 price point for the 512MB version—screen included.

MEGASTICK527.jpg imageIt's goofy looking, but the MSI Mega Stick 527 has a ton of features, including built-in USB 2.0 connector and an FM recording radio. Available in sizes up to 512 only, though, which puts it in a low-class slot at this point (as if the afro-sporting carton didn't already do so). Marketed to kids with no taste, the Mega Stick 527 gets 18 hours of battery life from a single AAA battery and should be available any time.

toodia_i01.jpg imageWell, you can say one thing about the TooDis MPal 400F flash memory video player: your hand isn't going to get tired watching movies on it. Well, not the hand holding it, anyway. The flash player has a 12-hour playback time on a single AA battery, although it must first convert all your movie files into the MMF format that resizes them to better fit the 400F's 1.8-inch screen. And although it's available in sizes up to 1GB, the lack of an on-board memory slot sort of kills a lot of the potential usefulness of the device. Still, I have to say I sort of like it. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it, mind you, but it's small enough to pack up and forget until you need it -- not many of the bigger, hard-disk personal video players are.

  • This is a breathtaking valuation. Even if I was allowed to invest in tech stocks (I'm not), I wouldn't touch this one with the proverbial 10-foot pole. Let's be clear. Google is already a great company. But this price, assuming bidders in the IPO auction go along, has gone to nosebleed altitudes. More later...
