Geometric Mapping and National Landmarks

Geometric Mapping and National Landmarks 09/02/2004 12:20 PM

U.S. disaster plans include cloned icons: An older article, but still an interesting look at the science of geometric mapping and how it's being used to ensure we can rebuild historical structures if they're destroyed.

The bottom line: Should disaster strike, and a political decision be made to rebuild, exact replicas — or architectural clones — could be constructed fairly quickly. How do you replicate the 225-ton, 305-foot Lady Liberty? The 288-foot Capitol dome? The 60-foot busts of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt?

Deploying high-powered, laser-scanning technology to record the landmarks from every angle, the feds have been creating three-dimensional digital models of their complex exterior features. They also have scanned part of the ornate interior of the Capitol.

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike 07/08/2004 08:44 AM

a-bike.jpg imageSir Clive Sinclair, inventor of the pocket calculator and the nigh-on-legendary Sinclair personal computer, has unveiled a new, folding bicycle design he's calling the 'A-Bike.' To be launched in 2005, the 12-pound bike can be folded and unfolded in around 20 seconds and rides on tiny, air-filled tires. The idea is (if it weren't obvious) to provide a cheapish alternative to full-sized bikes that can be folded up and taken with you wherever you go, although the $300 price is considerable more than it would cost to purchase a capable, if basic, street bicycle and chain. Still, I am intrigued. Portable urban transportation is one of my new pet pastimes, and the A-bike would be much easier to recharge than the electric scooters I've been eyeing (they sell pizza almost everywhere). (Thanks, Tim!)

Origami Folding Robot

Origami Folding Robot 12/15/2003 06:55 PM
Devin Balkcom and Matt Mason, working at the CMU Robotics Institute have created the world's first origami folding robot. The robot can fold a variety of traditional origami shapes. While the shapes are simple, the interesting part is that the robot determines the sequences of moves and folds needed on its own. What have they learned from the exercise? "For now, human hardware and software are superior: human fingers are great tools for manipulating delicate paper, and human intuition and intellect far outclass robotic planning capabilities." Devin's website includes a Quicktime video of the robot in action.

Shifting time and folding space

Shifting time and folding space 02/01/2005 08:52 PM
Yesterday I drove to a meeting in another state. On the way there and back, my car radio was tuned to no regular broadcast but instead to the pirate radio station in my briefcase. Its components: a $20 Belkin FM transmitter, a $90 Creative Nomad MuVo MP3 player, and do-it-yourself programming. As I drove to my destination, I listened to Shai Agassi's talk at the Accelerating Change Conference, courtesy of ITConversations.com. On the way back, I listened to an audio interview I'd done the day before, reviewing which parts I might want to use in a podcast or weave into an article.

When I got home, I dialed in to a conference call, fired up a WebEx session, and conducted another interview -- in this case, one that featured a demonstration of a software product. I made an audio/video recording of that demo, and, as soon as I get a chance to edit it down to the most interesting parts, I'll share it with you on my blog.

At the end of the day, it struck me that time-shifted content and space-folding telepresence are becoming complementary.

...

Martin Geddes, who blogs thoughtfully at telepocalypse.net about telecommunications and IT, recently asked an important question: "How do telecom and transport substitute [for] or complement one another?"

Geddes argues that although trillions of dollars ride on the answers, we mostly don't have a clue. It's a fascinating essay that I won't try to summarize, but one key point -- the distinction between "travel for sense of presence" and "travel for information exchange" -- is relevant here.

As Geddes notes, we're only now approaching the point at which telecom can sustain credible telepresence. Last weekend, my DSL was upgraded from 384Kbps to 3Mbps, and I can take it to 7Mbps if necessary. At what point does the link carry enough emotional bandwidth to begin displacing travel for sense of presence? I'm not holding my breath. Apple's iChat AV was cool before, and it'll be cooler now, but it's not going to replace face-to-face meetings any time soon.

Meanwhile, three megabits per second sure makes travel for information exchange seem sillier than it already did. Coupled with podcasting, it makes the two kinds of travel nicely complementary. The podcasting model is partly based on the assumption that TiVo-izing your audio content should be a scheduled process. Now that I can download hours of audio in mere seconds, I just grab what I need on the fly.

Shifting time, folding space, juggling atoms and bits -- is this how we want to live and work? Yes! [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike

Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike 03/23/2005 04:53 AM

panasonic_bike.jpg imagePanasonic has introduced a "folding" electric bicycle. Called the "Off Time," the bike can be folded to fit inside of a car's trunk, go with you on the train, or stashed under your bed for when you need to make a quick getaway. Its lithium-ion battery can drive for about two and a half hours, but I presume that even if it runs out, you can still pedal it like a normal bike.

My friend David Isenberg, the (justly) famous author of "Rise of the Stupid Network," is holding a workshop called WTF for provoacteurs, dreamers, and other cool folks on April 2-4 outside of New York City.  Looks to be a fantastic event.  I can't make it because of family obligations around Passover, but I encourage you to check it out.
