Murder She Wrote

Murder She Wrote 06/23/2004 06:23 AM

Halley wri tes:

Blog Murder

Is there a reason Dave Winer just killed 3000 blogs -- like this one (Tom Matrullo's) and this one (Dean Landsman's) and this one (Craig's Booknotes)-- and no one, including Slashdot has the balls to write about it?!

At least he's taken the gloves off -- if you thought he was a cuddly teddy bear friend of all bloggers -- you might want to rethink that.

then she added later:

And if you want to take the time to read what I wrote -- I never called anyone a "murderer" as some have claimed -- and my question was why no one else had written about it.

Halley obviously has some harsh feelings against Dave, feelings that distorts her view on anything Dave does.  I think it is all right for a person to not like another person.  But I think she should have just said so instead of practically calling Dave a murderer on flimsy evidences and then, instead of apologizing, resort to playing word games.

To Both Sides of Weblogs.com Conflict

I have a problem understanding people who routinely go beyond the needs of momentary emotional ranting to shred another person's reputation in public.  Over and over, they portray the focus of their anger as the ultimate evil.  What are they trying to accomplish?  If they are successful, then the person will be ruined professionally and shunned socially.  Is that really what they want?

If I could give them an advice, it is this:

If you are chasing, you better be ready to catch.

The founder of the GNU-Darwin project wrote an interesting editorial on Apple and open source today. I really appreciate that the GNU-Darwin project played a role in helping to make the APSL a better open source license.

In my opinion, Apple has made a lot of good progress (such as opening up Darwin, WebCore, and the Objective-C runtime under the APSL) but I do hope they'll go further and open up Cocoa under the APSL. Frequently when programming in Cocoa I remember that I have no significant rights since everything is still, as all of the Cocoa header files simply say, "Copyright 2003 Apple Computer. All Rights Reserved". I didn't use to care about that. Open source helped me realize that I can have rights, too. Apple's been gracious so far, I hope they continue to be. It's played a significant role in me buying and evangelizing Apple products.

Second: a friend is looking for answers to the following:
Any idea how to set permissions permanently in /dev/?

It's not a disk filesystem, so any changes you make are lost on reboot, and I want to change the perms of /dev/bpf* so I can run tcpdump as myself.

I've only found one reference, some guy on mailing list suggesting that apple's DevFS is old, and doesn't allow configuration of device permissions.

Any ideas? I can make tcpdump setuid root, but I've built 3 versions in the last 2 days, and there seems something wrong about having to do that (not the building, the setuid rooting).

Anyone? Discuss

Work is murder

Work is murder 03/08/2004 11:14 PM
The weather was beautiful, so I decided to stay indoors and code all day. Then, in a sudden burst of (in?)sanity (with some prodding from a fellow being) I went to see the Helmut Newton exhibition, open for the last day. I was sort of disappointed, since the exhibition is relatively small, but those photographs that were there, were really rather good.

If the exhibition had been a whiskey, I would describe it as: "strong, provocative, with a surprising mellow nose. Hints of vanilla, which disappear under a complex bouquet of tobacco, nuts, and leather. The aftertaste is long, yet slightly oily and metallic. Good as a pre-dinner dram, to be enjoyed with friends of similar tastes."

And now, back to some complex decisions. And some real whiskey. ;-)

Linux Kernel "Back Door" Attempted 11/06/2003 02:48 PM
KernelTrap has a very interesting article about a recent attempt to sneak a "back door" into the Linux 2.6 kernel. Evidently someone managed to break into the CVS server that mirrors the kernel source tree and add a small patch allowing one to locally obtain "root" super-user access. Fortunately, during an export from the master BitKeeper version of the kernel source tree into the CVS mirror, the change was detected and quickly removed.

How Berkeley Can You Be?

How Berkeley Can You Be? 10/29/2003 01:16 AM
I finally got around to sorting through and captioning the photos I took of the How Berkeley Can You Be? parade and Art Car fest that was held in Berkeley at the end of September. Going through the pictures reminded me of some of the reasons I like living in Berkeley so much. Sure, people regularly overdo political correctness here, and there were a lot of "Only in Berkeley" groups and moments in the parade, but on the whole it was an amazing display of the diversity, creativity and sense of humor that make this a fun place to live. There were also a lot of self-mocking groups poking fun at Berkley. I love it when people retain the ability to laugh at themselves, and it is a highly desirable quality for living in Berkeley. Luckily, it is also a frequently displayed quality. One of the stars of the parade was the Sashimi Tabernacle Choir, an art car from Houston Texas, of all places. 5 miles of wiring that must have taken months of work to put together, all for a bunch of plastic fish and lobsters who sing while being conducted by large crustacean. It sounds silly, but it was wonderful. I could track its progress down University Avenue by the gales of laughter is spawned as it passed by. After the parade, people crowded around for hours and were treated to special performances by the Choir. I got some good photos. If it comes to your town, don't miss it. Or it even has its own website, with a very funny account of its construction, you can check it out at www.sashimitabernaclechoir.org....

Make Fun Of A Professor, Lose Your

Make Fun Of A Professor, Lose Your
Computer
01/09/2004 09:50 PM
A student at the University of Northern Colorado created a silly little online newsletter about things happening at the university, where he made fun of a certain professor in a very over-the-top and satirical manner. The apparently thin-skinned professor complained to the police, who have charged the student with libel, and taken away his computer. This seems to be going way too far. First, the piece is obvious satire (he has a morphed picture of the professor making him look like he's a member of the band KISS and calling him a former roadie). Even if, in some weird part of the world, such obvious satire was considered libel, there's no reason to take this guy's computer away. More importantly, though, this is yet another example of what happens when you complain about something appearing on the internet that you don't want people to see. Until today, this random picture and story of the professor was only appearing on some lightly visited Geocities page and getting no attention. Today, the picture is in USA Today. You can try to legally force people to take something off the internet, but be warned that it's only likely to give it much more attention.
