In "Imperial Hubris," a not-so-anonymous senior CIA officer says that bin Laden isn't an apocalyptic evildoer who "hates our freedom" -- he and his followers have real grievances that we must address by changing our failed Mideast policies.

HauntCon: a convention for spook-housers
and amateur haunters
01/03/2005 06:08 AM
Cory Doctorow: HauntCon is the national haunter's convention, a gathering of the tribes for people who build elaborate Hallowe'en dioramae and/or operate spook houses across the land. The next HauntCon, which will take place April 22-24 in Dallas, has just opened for reg. Features include modded-hearse races, a "haunted garage sale" for swapping your bits and pieces, a trade floor, and learned presentations on haunting techniques. I've always wanted to attend one of these, but every year events conspire to keep me away (this year is no exception; I'll be the Guest of Honor at Penguicon, the Linux/sf convention in Detroit that weekend -- my cup runneth over!). 2006, then -- for sure! Embedding With A Lisp

Embedding With A Lisp 07/20/2004 06:00 AM
Embedding With A Lisp By William Wong,  ED Online (Volume 2004, Number 5)
htt p://www.elecdesign.com/Articles/ArticleID/8420/8420.html

"Lisp stands for List Processing, but there have been many other descriptions provided such as Lots of Irritating Superfluous Parentheses. Experienced programmers without Lisp exposure normally go into shock when looking at a Lisp program for the first time, but after a little work Lisp coding becomes natural to the point where other languages now start to look arcane. Trust me. Lisp code is not really totally foreign. Take this little snippet for example.... Assuming you have made it this far, you might be wondering why Lisp has not taken the world by storm. Lisp is actually very old. It is only preceded by Fortran in terms of age for high-level languages. Along the way, Lisp has seen a number of myths built up around it. For example, many consider Lisp to be a language for "artificial intelligence" (AI). While it is true that Lisp is a key language for AI applications, AI is not the only realm for Lisp. Lisp has been used in a range of applications from transportation scheduling to web scripting applications. Emacs was a popular text editor that was based on Lisp."

Steel Bank Common Lisp 0.8.21 (Default
branch)
03/28/2005 01:34 PM
Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection, lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes:
Thread support for non-NPTL systems has been removed, since locking is buggy and unreliable. The optimization policy is now handled in the manner which ANSI specifies. Disassembling X86-64 code is now more robust. Single-precision floating point numbers can now be represented as immediates on X86-64.
