Slab City, CA "is not so sinister as it is a strange, forlorn quarter of America. It is a town that is not really a town, a former training grounds with nothing left but the concrete slabs where the barracks stood. [...] The land belongs to the state, but the state, like the law, does not bother, and so the Slabs have become a place to park free. More than 3,000 elderly people settle in for the winter, in a pattern that dates back at least 20 years." [NYT Reg Req]

Cellphone numbers are going to start showing up in directory assistance sometime next year:

Individual carriers would determine whether subscribers would have to pay to be unlisted. Other privacy options are possible, too. For example, wireless phone users might choose to be unlisted but willing to receive a short text message, sent through the directory service, from someone trying to contact them.

Do cellphones cause cancer?

Do cellphones cause cancer? 11/18/2003 03:18 PM
The jury is still out on whether or not cellphones cause brain cancer, but let's just say that the latest research indicates that it's not looking so good. Unfortunately, Federally-funded research that might be able to give us a conclusive answer to all this isn't expected to be completed until 2011. Just in time for the massive epidemic of brain cancer that's predicted. Read [Via WiFi Networking News]...

How cellphones change teenagers

How cellphones change teenagers 08/03/2004 05:15 AM
Sociologist Mimi Ito has just published a great paper on the way that mobile phones change teen social interaction on Vodaphone's Receiver magazine:
After young people have converged in physical space, mobile communication does not necessarily end. In contrast to work meetings in which mobile communications are largely excluded, among gatherings of young people, the mobile phone is a social accessory. They might call a friend, inviting them to join them, or getting information about the conversation at hand. When an email message comes into a friend's mobile, it is quite common to ask who it was from and a conversation about that person to ensue. Young people generally reported that they had no reservations about making contact with others via mobile phones when they were with a group of friends, though they might make a brief apology if a one-on-one gathering was interrupted with a voice call.

Cellphones vulnerable to SMS-bomb

Cellphones vulnerable to SMS-bomb 03/19/2003 10:45 PM
A certain make of Siemens cellular handset, popular in Europe, can be shut down by sending an SMS-encoded message to it. Hilarity ensues.
The e-mails contain a single word, taken from the phone's language menu, surrounded by quote marks and preceded by an asterisk, such as "*English" or "*Deutsch," Siemens said.

Opening the short-text message on a Siemens 35 series cell completely disables it, Rice said. Siemens 45 series phones are less affected and can be resuscitated after about two minutes of work, Rice said. Both phones are sold only in Europe.

nw_col_spat_samuelson_021704.jpg imageThere was a time where I thought my career was going to be in that sparkling sugarplum factory known as "computers," but reading columns like this one by Robert J. Samuelson has convinced me that my career in "journalism" is much more suited to my desire to string lots of curmudgeonly words together and get paid for it. This week's insightful column? "A Cell Phone? Never for Me." You fight that power, Samuelson. (I especially like the part where he notes that he has also "resisted ATM cards, laptops, and digital cameras." This is the part where Zombie Thoreau puts down his cell phone and slaps the wax out of him.)

So that's journalism, I guess. I can't wait until I'm old and can write columns for Newsweek like, "What's Up With Mustard?" and "Holo Porn? It's 2D for Me."

Roland Piquepaille writes "In "Cellpho ne software allows a musical jam," the New Scientist writes that English engineers have found a way for groups of people to collectively create music using their cellphones. "Nick Bryan-Kinns and his colleagues at Queen Mary College (QMC) have developed the "daisyphone" software that let will groups of people phone into a mobile number and work together to improvise short, looping tunes." My blog gives you more details on the project and includes a screen capture of the creation of some school kids after using the software. You can try daisyphone by yourself (providing you have Java 1.4.1). I certainly hope you'll be better than me. "

Open source audio

Open source audio 12/27/2004 01:20 PM
I've always wondered what it would be like to use audio to tell a story. Today's podcast is my first real attempt at doing that. The title is Open Source Audio and the story is one that I've been trying to tell a number of folks -- and in particular, my non-geek friends -- for a while now. The story begins with a snippet from a 1924 recording of Lonesome Road Blues from the Internet Archive's open source audio collection. After brief discussions of the Edison site at the National Park Service, and the Creative Commons public domain license under which many of these early recordings have been released to the Internet Archive, we hear Brewster Kahle talking about his vision of universal storage and access. I recorded his remarks during a talk he gave at the O'Reilly open source conference in Portland last summer. ...
