anti-social network

anti-social network 05/26/2004 04:45 PM

I've always considered LinkedIn as a sort of grown-up version of Friendster. Instead of Friendster focused on trying to get everyone laid, Linkedin seems to focus on more corporate pursuits, like getting jobs, making connections related to business, and generally growing your corporate network. I haven't done much with my account there, and I've only seen maybe one instance of someone using me to connect to someone I've worked with to discuss a new technology they developed.

What I have seen happen more often is that Linkedin is used as an introduction service. Every few weeks I'll get an email saying "Alice Smith would like to talk to John Doe, who you are two degrees from, click here to accept" and wonder why the first and last person didn't just email directly. Today someone four people away from me sent an innocous question that I would have answered over email in a second. It probably took a few days, and everyone in the chain that hadn't heard of the original question asker or the intended recipient had to go along with it.

I know a lot of people say "email is broken" but is it so far gone that people have to climb the corporate ladder just to drop a stranger a note? If we must use systems like this, isn't there a way to make it less of a hassle?

Anti-IBM Move
06/01/2004 10:23 AM
IBM is positioning Linux as a viable competitor to Windows -- and Unix -- in business accounts. But, it has been loathe to offer a similarly public endorsement of Linux or open-source software that competes with its own DB2- and WebSphere-branded database and application server, observers said. HP can use its new allies to wrest enterprise and SMB deals away from IBM with two software offerings that have huge buzz in the market. Even solution providers offering Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and Oracle databases say MySQL is gaining credibility even in mission-critical applications. That, despite the fact, that the commercial database costs just $400 or so per server.

States Move Forward With Pointless
Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law

States Move Forward With Pointless
Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law
03/28/2005 06:33 PM
Last month, there was a story about how some online dating site that claims to do background checks on its members (though, they don't actually check to make sure the person is who they say they are) was trying to get state politicians to pass laws requiring such checks or force other dating or social networking sites to put a huge notice saying: "WARNING: WE HAVE NOT CONDUCTED A FELONY-CONVICTION SEARCH OR FBI SEARCH ON THIS INDIVIDUAL." This law is obviously completely pointless other than to try to make life difficult for the competition of this one tiny dot com dating site. However, it appears that a number of clueless politicians are buying it, and just such a law is moving forward in a number of states, with Michigan leading the way. What's amusing (though, in other ways, scary) is the rationale one of the Michigan sponsors is giving: "There are inherent dangers in the whole area of the Internet. Something needs to be done." This seems like a fairly typic al political response. Something isn't perfect, so a law must be passed -- even if it will have no impact and (if anything) likely make the situation worse, not better. Of course, for the dating site that is pushing all of these laws, it's only going to backfire on them if the law passes -- because then those other sites will start doing background checks, and this site will lose its one tiny, pointless differentiating factor. You have to wonder if they pushed for the legislation with the belief that there was no way it would pass -- but they were likely to get some press out of it. Now what will they do if it actually does pass?

Social Applications For Social Devices

Social Applications For Social Devices 07/13/2004 01:53 AM
The mobile phone, by its very nature is a "social" device. It's designed to help connect you to someone else. While most of the early efforts to create "mobile data" have come from a broadcast mindset (delivery produced content to an audience), it looks like some are finally realizing that mobile data apps need to be social to really catch on. If they're not making use of the mobile phone for what it's good for, then it's unlikely to get too much attention. MIT's Tech Review has a good overview of a variety of different "social" projects related to mobile devices, from the ever popular "Dodgeball" mobile social networking application to Fluidtime's dorm room washing machine SMS scheduler (and negotiator, should you find out you need the machine now and someone else has it booked). These are the types of applications that really are the future of mobile phones -- and not the ability to watch the latest reality TV series on your phone or to receive a marketing message from Disney.

Kevin Werbach points out that social networking sites like LinkedIn and Tribe and so forth have very little to offer highly connected people like Esther Dyson, who would nevertheless be a real asset to the network:
Esther and Pierre don't need LinkedIn to reach pretty much anyone they want to contact. Yet there are a whole lot of folks who want to reach them, and don't have a personal connection to do so. So the service worsens their email overload with little corresponding benefit.

Musician Charlie Daniels is disgusted by Hollywood types who oppose Bush's plan to invade Iraq.
You people are some of the most disgusting examples of a waste of protoplasm I’ve ever had the displeasure to hear about.

Sean Penn, you’re a traitor to the United States of America. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy. How many American lives will your little, ”fact finding trip“ to Iraq cost? You encouraged Saddam to think that we didn’t have the stomach for war.

You people protect one of the most evil men on the face of this earth and won’t lift a finger to save the life of an unborn baby.

Freedom of choice you say?
