06/23/2004 05:38 PMWired has a
bizarre story of music and sampling royalties involving found
sound recordings by one person sold as CDs which the band Wilco
sampled from. What is unusual about the case is the company claiming
copyright on the sounds, Irdial
Discs, didn't perform or write the shortwave broadcasts of what is
reportedly hours of spy messages. Irdial simply recorded (and obtained
recordings from others) four discs full of it and released it as a
compilation. While they embrace free
downloading and sharing of the tracks, they do prohibit commercial
use, which Wilco looped on a successful 2002 album.
As the article states, many legal experts are unsure if Irdial had the
rights to demand royalties and point out that future musicians may be
wary of using found sounds such as these.

08/14/2004 05:13 PMDavid Akin has started something that ought to become standard issue
for all blogs: An upfront disclosure statement of who pays for the
blog and where the conflicts of interest might be. (This should make
Zephyr Teachout of the Dean campaign happy; I spent some time with her
at the Demo Convention and she wanted to see something just like this
happen.) So, now we can argue for the next 9 months about exactly what
ought to go into one of these statements, and who's more dislosive
than whom, but let's at least get started. Here's a first draft of...

Best Buy's highly skilled
staff of cashier-working counterfeit detectors, "a little nervous
in the post-9/11 world", has the Baltimore police department put
customer
Mike Bolesta
in handcuffs and leg irons after he uses uncommon but legal US
currency to pay his bill.
"Meanwhile, everybody's looking at me. I've lived here 18
years. I'm hoping my kids don't walk in and see this. And I'm saying,
'I can't believe you're doing this. I'm paying with legal American
money.'" Bolesta was then taken to the county police lockup in
Cockeysville, where he sat handcuffed to a pole and in leg irons while
the Secret Service was called in. IBM pays up for NY pollution

Standards Compliancy Pays Off Again
Standards Compliancy Pays Off Again
11/18/2002 12:58 PMI mentioned a few days ago that I had purchased a Toshiba e740 PDA.
Well, I have it, and it has made me love developing with web standards
even more.
My site uses CSS2 to control the layout of the page. Also, the
Javascript DOM is used to remove all Javascript coding out of my pages
and into script files. The result, pages that load quickly and
display logically in the small browser window you have in Pocket
Internet Explorer. Another factor that makes pages readable in PDA's
is because the content of my site, and so many others in this
community, is at the top of documents, while navigational markup is
below it. Pages littered with nested tables and other antiquated
markup, however, render poorly in the browser.
Issue 154 at A List Apart: Flash Satay. How to make your markup used
to display flash movies XHTML valid (a feat I thought impossible).
I've added a few more feeds to the Outside Reading area, keep sending
in recommedations.

06/03/2004 06:40 PMAP - If a woman wants to make more money than a man, her job options
are severely limited. She could clean up hazardous waste. Or install
telecommunications lines. But not much else. The Census Bureau
compiled statistics on hundreds of job categories from its 2000
headcount and found just five where women typically earn at least as
much as men.
