Green Scientist: Nuclear Power Vital to
Save Earth

Green Scientist: Nuclear Power Vital to
Save Earth
05/24/2004 02:25 PM

  • James Lovelock: Nuclear power is the only green solution. We have stayed in ignorance for many reasons; important among them is the denial of climate change in the US where governments have failed to give their climate scientists the support they needed. The Green lobbies, which should have given priority to global warming, seem more concerned about threats to people than with threats to the Earth, not noticing that we are part of the Earth and wholly dependent upon its well being. It may take a disaster worse than last summer's European deaths to wake us up.
  • Lovelock's environmental credentials are unassailable. So this call for expanded use of nuclear power almost certainly comes in the best of faith. I wish he didn't minimize conservation. In calling nuclear power safe, moreover, he also minimizes the still-unsolved problems of long-term storage and the potential for nuclear materials to fall into the wrong hands (dirty bombs or worse, anyone?). And all it would take is one uncontrolled meltdown in a populated area to make nuclear power statistically less safe than just about any other form of energy. But his overall message is also pointed and impossible to dismiss. We are lurching toward disaster on our present course.

    Energy Dreams and Energy Realities

Energy Dreams and Energy Realities 06/19/2004 03:13 PM
Interesting dissection of US energy/environmental politics and policy along conservative/liberal lines: "We are, it seems, always in some kind of energy crisis, real or imagined. Some worry that our major sources of energy are about to run out. Some despair that our energy-hungry civilization is destroying the natural world. Some believe our quest for energy is driving us into unnecessary wars and unsavory alliances. And some lament that excessive regulations on energy development are crippling the American way of life. When it comes to energy politics, there is no shortage of alarmism, conservative and liberal alike." The conclusion was sorta weak tho, I thought :D [via J. Orlin Grabbe - NSFW!]

Where should you go for news, research, shopping, and more? We compare Goliaths of the Web to lesser-known upstarts--and discover some surprising results. The Web has been around long enough that even the most adventuresome surfer might end up in a rut, always using the same sites to get work done. So we put up the periscope to scan for the best newcomers and compared them to the Net's stalwarts. In each category, one site emerged as the Best Bet--but that shouldn't dissuade you from exploring the other contenders, all of which offer innovative and useful features you won't find anywhere else.
