Speakeasy to Build WiMax Network

Speakeasy to Build WiMax Network 08/27/2004 05:09 PM
Speakeasy received an investment from Intel to help it build a WiMax network: The ISP, based in Seattle, hopes to have a network in place during the second half of next year but it's not clear where. Speakeasy's CEO says here that the company turns away 30 percent of potential customers because they can't be served by its DSL partners. Owning and operating a WiMax network would be a big change for Speakeasy, which today resells DSL from Covad. But WiMax was made for a company like Speakeasy that has always been on the cutting edge of offering new services. The company currently encourages customers to share their connections via Wi-Fi and will even handle billing so that multiple customers can share a single connection. Speakeasy is technically savvy enough to build and use a WiMax network and the company understands how much it can grow its customer base by extending its service area....

For network security, build a m0n0wall 03/22/2005 03:45 PM
M0n0wall is an open source firewall and wireless router developed by Manuel Kasper, built on a stripped-down FreeBSD operating system. M0n0wall offers many of the same features found in commercial firewalls products such as Check Point Firewall-1 and Cisco Pix, including stateful packet filtering. With it you can create a secure virtual private network (VPN) between two sites, or you can use m0n0wall as a VPN gateway, so you can access your LAN secure from the Internet. You can use RADIUS for client authentication in order to raise the security even higher.

Hartford To Build Free Citywide Network?

Hartford To Build Free Citywide Network? 03/24/2005 11:43 AM
Hartford's mayor promised free Wi-Fi access to residents citywide in his state of the city address: The Hartford Advocate looks into this network's feasibility. The mayor proposes to not just provide a free network, but also to give computers to less-advantaged local residents. Hartford has had a problem for decades and decades with "rich flight": it may be divided across racial lines, but anyone with any money moved across city lines. The county structure in Connecticut is very weak providing no shield to a big city with big problems. (My wife grew up in West Hartford; I spent five years in New Haven. It's pretty clear that wealthy suburbs can suck a city dry in a way that's not quite the same in other parts of the country.) Comcast played its hand pretty broadly when the Advocate reported asked for comment. Declining, the spokesperson suggested an analyst at The Heartland Institute, a group I've written about extensively on this site which doesn't disclose funding and released a report rife with direct ties to Verizon and Issue Dynamics, an incumbent telecom and cable PR and lobbying firm. The work is still in the planning stages, but with only a third of Hartford residents hooked up to the Internet--and 83 percent of the poorest family not surprisingly having no computer--the city sees this as a critical gap they want to close....

http://www.delos.info/

The DELOS network intends to conduct a joint program of activities aimed at integrating and coordinating the ongoing research activities of the major European teams working in Digital Library - related areas with the goal of developing the next generation Digital Library technologies. The objective is to: a) define unifying and comprehensive theories and frameworks over the life-cycle of Digital Library information, and b) build interoperable multimodal/multilingual services and integrated content management ranging from the personal to the global for the specialist and the general population. The Network aims at developing generic Digital Library technology to be incorporated into industrial-strength Digital Library Management Systems (DLMSs), offering advanced functionality through reliable and extensible services. The Network will also disseminate knowledge of Digital Library technologies to many diverse application domains. To this end a Virtual Digital Library Competence Centre has been established which provides specific user communities with access to advanced Digital Library technologies, services, testbeds, and the necessary expertise and knowledge to facilitate their take-up.

South African villages to get digital
cinema network

South African villages to get digital
cinema network
04/05/2005 09:23 PM
Xeni Jardin: Excerpt from Variety article:
The vast majority of South Africa's 40-million people have never been to the cinema, kept away by the legacy of apartheid, poverty and language barriers. But the nation's exhibs are hoping to change that by using the indigenous filmmaking along with digital technology to connect to the missing multitudes (...)

Starting in September, Shout Africa will roll out 20 digital cinemas around the country where facilities are most lacking, to make the movies affordable and accessible. Shout Africa chief executive Lance Samuels says that for local producers, these cinemas will provide another distribution outlet as well as the opportunity to build new audiences.

Locally produced films in indigenous languages and English will be shown alongside foreign features, with subtitles in the vernacular language of the region of the cinema.Besides the usual popcorn and soft drinks, popular traditional township foods such as maize porridge, spicy sausages, samp (hominy), mealies (corn on the cob) and fried chicken will be on sale to help make the d-cinema experience more African.

Samuels says d-cinemas will be located in revamped township community centers to create a quality experience, including comfortable chairs, high quality digital projection and state of the art surround sound. And, hoping to seal the deal, prices will be much lower than at urban multiplexes.

Wonder what kind of gear the company will be installing? Will this be true cinema-grade digital projection, or something cruddier and lower-res (and, hence, more affordable)? Either way, it's fascinating news, and points to one of the greatest promises of this technology. Which hardware manufacturer(s) will be involved?

Here's more info on the "Shout Africa" d-cinema initiative, Link, by way of Sithengi -- a company that promotes the South African television and film industry.

Link to Variety story (paid sub required, but the story seems to be largely cribbed from the Sithengi press release anyway... )
