Internet to see major strike today?

Internet to see major strike today? 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Yevgeny Kaspersky, of Kaspersky Labs fame, has raised concerns of a major attack on the internet today. Kaspersky has been widely quoted as saying that there would be a major online attack against Israeli sites today. "Arabic and Hebrew language websites contained an announcement of an 'electronic jihad' against Israel, to start on 26th August 2004".

True? Quite possibly. However, after this news was widely circulated around the web, Kaspersky went on to clarify his comments. He remarked that the true possibility of the threat was 'low', but added that Kaspersky Labs would be raising their online thread level.

He also commented (and raised a very valid point) that if not today, it could be tomorrow that we see an attack. He noted that the many insecurities in the internet’s structure and popular Operating systems meant that it was only a matter of time before online terrorists added 'the internet' to their arsenal of weapons.

Although such a major attack has yet to take place on the internet, a few have come close. Of note, an attack on Akamai, WWW content distributor/cache, did serious damage due to the number of sites hosted with them. Equally damaging was an attack in October 2002 on the Root servers of the internet, that manage DNS. For more information on this kind of attack, read here for an extensive interview with Dave Dittrich.

Twists And Turns This Year In Internet
Law
12/23/2003 12:57 PM
No surprise, of course, but it's shaping up to be a pretty slow news week, with hundreds of either "year in review" or "predictions for next year" type of stories filling up the space. Most of these aren't all that interesting, but News.com is running a pretty good year in review of internet-related legal issues that gives a good summary of what's been happening. Mostly, the news isn't very good. Some bad laws, some bad rulings, and lots and lots of questionable intellectual property lawsuits. There were a few good rulings mixed in with the bunch, but on the whole, things don't look so great in retrospect.

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet
12/12/2003 05:44 AM
Some things you just don't expect. If your car was stolen in 1983, you probably have given up hope by now that you'll ever see it again. But, you should never doubt the power of the internet. A man who had his 1968 Mercury Cougar stolen in 1983 is getting the car back, thanks to the internet. Someone posted a classified ad trying to sell the car, and while investigating the background of the car, someone figured out that the car had been stolen and informed the rightful owner - suggesting he buy the car. However, the true owner was still in possession of all the paperwork saying that he's the rightful owner of the car, and therefore shouldn't have to pay to recover his own car. Meanwhile, the guy who had it has been arrested for "possession of stolen property" - though, he says the car was a gift from his father. Over the course of twenty years, I imagine the car could have shifted hands a few times.
