MSI Debuts Dual AGP+PCI Express Card

MSI Debuts Dual AGP+PCI Express Card 06/06/2005 12:13 AM
For those of us that don't have the resources to upgrade our systems in one go, say from a AGP to PCI-e based mainboard, MSI have come up with a solution that allows the card to be used in either AGP or a PCI-e slot.

Visitors of MSI's booth at Computex 2005 had the chance to see the first graphics card that supports both AGP 8X and the PCI Express x16 interfaces. The card can be installed either in an AGP or a PCI Express slot by simply mounting it on your main board in the corresponding direction: the topt edge of the card fits in PCI Express slot, while the bottom edge fits in the AGP slot.

MSI showcased the RADEON X800 XL with the PCI Express interface embeded in the video chip while the AGP interface uses a bridge chip. Information about when the card will be launched on the market is not yet available.

SPY PEN USB Flash Drive with SD Card

SPY PEN USB Flash Drive with SD Card

spy_pen_sd.jpg image

It's sad that these days, almost anything that refers to itself as a 'spy something' is probably pretty pedestrian when it's all said and done. So while this "SPY DISK with card reader" isn't amazing, it is surprisingly enough that it actually does something cool at all. Available with internal memory sizes of 128MB or 256MB, the cap-end also functions as an SD/MMC card reader. You can't copy directly from the SD cards to the internal memory -- you'll have to copy to your PC, then back -- but it's a pretty great idea in general, even if it doesn't shoot lasers or eject poison gas. And hey, it's USB 2.0! Maybe the cheap gear is finally starting to see the light of fast transfer rates.

iomagic_datastation.jpg LogoDespite what you might expect, I think this is great: a USB external floppy drive that doubles a 7-in-1 media card reader from I/O Magic. I figure, though, that for the few people that actually still need a stinky old format like 3.5" should have to pay the extra $70 for it so the rest of us can leave them our of our PCs for good. I have a floppy drive in this box, but it's not even hooked up. I just leave it there to remind me I am enjoying a floppyless life.

Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot

Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

panasonic_minicompo.jpg imageAlso introduced by Panasonic yesterday were the "SC-PM910DVD" and "SC-PM710SD" minicomponent systems, both supporting a variety of audio formats on a variety of mediums. Each has a 5-CD changer, MD deck, cassette deck, radio tuner, and for the first time in the world, SD card slot. Panasonic has gone to extra lengths to make sure you take advantage of this slot as well; you can play and record audio files from (or to) the inserted card. The units are capable of playing MP3 and WMA files from CDs, and can play those same formats as well as AAC from SD cards. The PM910DVD adds DVD-Video support too, but it's not as if you'll be using such a feature outside of Japan.
