Learning Technology: The Myths and Facts by John A Finnis
http://www.itd l.org/Journal/May_04/article07.htm

Abstract
This paper considers some of the major issues in the field of learning technology. It seeks to identify areas in which technology has greatest potential to contribute to the learning process, and also those areas in which the application of technology is inappropriate or detrimental. Issues include the support of different kinds of learner, learning environments, reusability and accessibility. Questions raised include the changing role of learning in the information age, extent to which learning materials may be re-used, and how misunderstandings between various contributors to learning technology projects may be overcome. The paper concludes with a hypothetical example of an effective application of learning technology.

Every time there is a downturn in the economy, one of the first things to be reduced or eliminated is training. The reason behind this rational from most CEO’s perspectives is that training is both expensive and ineffective. The question that needs to be addressed if this is the case is: “Why bother to train at all?”As companies continue to emerge out of the recent recession, there is a closer examination of the role of training and its underlying costs. Rather than fall back upon traditional seminar-training models, CEO’s realize there are cheaper and more effective methods available. This is a wake-up call for many training managers, who are no longer able to rely on conventional training tools if they wish to keep their jobs. [PRWEB Aug 18, 2004]

During the boom times of the 1990’s, corporate training evolved into a medium that entertains more than trains employees, partially in response to the desire to retain talented ones.As companies emerge from the past years of recession, their senior managers are no longer tolerant of high priced services that fail to produce comparable results. This has been demonstrated by wholesale resistance to price increases recently attempted in the software and accounting service industries. This has implications for the training industry. A bushy-tailed morning in the quest for truth : MemeTank and dKosopedia This morning, I wondered - where's the update to (the deceased) Steve Kangas' mighty liberal FAQ ? "Update?", thought I, "Well, this attempt ran out of steam" Then..."Ah, a Wiki !" Then, "well, isn't truth the point ?...shouldn't it be Bipartisan, or multipartisan ?" Daily Kos was just sniffing (May 28th) along that trail, it seemed....partway : "We hope the dKosopedia will become the progressive-political version of the Wikipedia, a political FAQ so to speak" Would the "Dkosopedia" benefit from a less partisan stance ?

But, the MemeTank rocks -with it's bestiary of Liberal/Progressive, Right Wing, and "other" memes and the (MemeTank's) "Meme Development Project....This section is for people who want to invent new memes and try to encourage professional journalists to start using them."

Commentary: Like many readers, I find Microsoft's Get the Facts (GtF) ads repugnant, especially when they appear on sites dedicated to Linux and open source software. I understand that such organizations' editorial and ad sales staffs operate independently, meaning neither side tells the other what content it is or isn't allowed to carry, but I still don't like it. Happily, however, the bogus GtF ads may not be around much longer.

Time to face reality. Some of our bedrock assumptions turn out to be unfounded. And chief technologists can be subject to outdated beliefs as often as any professional. With that in mind, we addressed six common IT myths and deconstructed them to give managers a clear view of some important assumptions that might otherwise throw a monkey wrench into their technology plans.

Five myths about 'Wronghorn'

Five myths about 'Wronghorn' 11/17/2003 12:48 PM
At its annual developer conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft made a lot of noise about the upcoming release of Longhorn, the next re-haul of the Windows operating system. Longhorn won't be available until 2006, assuming there are no more slips in the release date (it has already been delayed three times). Microsoft served up another dose of rhetoric that inevitably encourages locking developers and customers into Microsoft products. As far as I can tell, Longhorn is yet another Windows wolf dressed up in sheep's clothing.

Top ten myths about gurus

Top ten myths about gurus 04/06/2005 12:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Over at Guruphiliac, Jody Radzik outlines the top ten myths about your guru... any guru. Here are a couple:
10. Guruji knows what's best for you
While we acknowledge the possibility that a real true guru could know what's best for you, s/he'd also know it's best to let you decide for yourself. Gurus who pretend to know what's best for all their devotees are fooling themselves as much as they are their disciples...

4. Guruji has no desires
This is based in the most pervasive of the occluding expectations, that desire somehow prevents self-realization. Desire is merely the way the body responds to conditions. The guru may (or may not) be over sex, but when they want a Twinkie, they go get a Twinkie.

The Myths of Children

The Myths of Children 11/13/2003 05:22 AM
The homeless children of Miami have developed an interesting and amazing belief system, which brings them hope and the ability to understand the world and the circumstances they exist in. This story, as written by Lynda Edwards for the Miami New Times gives an insightful and at times, beautiful look into the folklore and tales of the children. "To homeless children sleeping on the street, neon is as comforting as a night-light. Angels love colored light too. After nightfall in downtown Miami, they nibble on the NationsBank building -- always drenched in a green, pink, or golden glow. "They eat light so they can fly," eight-year-old Andre tells the children sitting on the patio of the Salvation Army's emergency shelter on NW 38th Street. Andre explains that the angels hide in the building while they study battle maps. "There's a lot of killing going on in Miami," he says. "You want to fight, want to learn how to live, you got to learn the secret stories." The small group listens intently to these tales told by homeless children in shelters. "
