From KISS to KIDS – An ‘anti-simplistic’ Modelling Approach
http://bruce .edmonds.name/kiss2kids/kiss2kids.html

Abstract
A new approach is suggested under the slogan “Keep it Descriptive Stupid” (KIDS) that encapsulates a trend in increasingly descriptive agent-based social simulation. The KIDS approach entails one starts with the simulation model that relates to the target phenomena in the most straight-forward way possible, taking into account the widest possible range of evidence, including anecdotal accounts and expert opinion. Simplification is only applied when and if the model and evidence justify this. This contrasts sharply with the KISS approach where one starts with the simplest possible model and only moves to a more complex one if forced to. An example multi-agent simulation of domestic water demand and social influence is described.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Hare lips can kiss, or so they say...

Hare lips can kiss, or so they say... 04/15/2005 09:30 AM
Jake Thackray doesn't have a lot of fans but the fans that he does have are loyal and devoted.

A dominant inspiration to the modern English Chanton music scene, from the end of the sixties until the early eighties, Jake was never off the television as resident troubadour on shows like the Braden Beat, and That's Life A schoolteacher and a devout Roman Catholic, his songs express an openness and tolerance for dissident sexualities that is rarely associated with modern Christianity.

There are those who would argue that Jake has a
misogynistic streak , though I believe that if you take his ouvre as a whole into account, the exact opposite is true -- though modern sensibilities make some of his lyrics seem a trifle gauche -- many of his greatest songs being composed precisely at the time that Women's Liberation was starting to appear on the political stage. However, even if Jake were to be found guilty as charged on these counts, his best songs reflect a tenderness and a passion that can make you feel the guy deserves a little latitude for his more dubious sentiments.

Unfortunately, Jake never fitted easily into any of the popular genres. Too commercial to be a folk singer, too electric, too jazzy, too pop. And he was never cool enough to be genre-busting. For a couple of decades, he was just that old geezer on the sort of TV programmes that your old mum liked to watch.

But many of us always had a sneaking admiration for the cleverness of his lyrics, and the wonderful timbre of his distinctive Yorkshire voice, even if we'd never dream of buying one of his records, and hadn't heard his voice since he dropped off the TV in the early eighties.

Apparently, Jake quit the business while he was pretty much at the height of his career. He seems to have thought that being a performing monkey is no career for a grown man to have. And a couple of years ago, he died -- poor, but leaving behind a wonderful but underappreciated legacy of songs and performances.

Like everyone else, I'd forgotten about Jake Thackray, until a couple of weeks ago, when a friend dropped me off a copy of one of his CD's and it hasn't been out of the CD tray since.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to convey much about a musician without being able to link to samples of his music, but there really isn't very much out there. But if you read the introduction to the book of his lyrics, at the bottom of the page you'll find links to I stayed off work today and Jake Thackray's Last Will and Testament.

Enjoy!

Kiss mahhh grits, Mel!

Kiss mahhh grits, Mel! 01/06/2005 07:27 PM
As I'm sure you all know, today would've been the 74th birthday of actor Vic Tayback, best known as everybody's favorite hairy, sweaty, ill-tempered (yet almost cuddly) diner chef on that wacky piece of 70's tv Americana Alice (Remember when Mel called Vera "dingy"? Sitcom gold!). Kept busy for years as a character actor with constant tv guest spots on everything from "I Dream of Jeannie" to "Gunsmoke," Vic embraced job security when given an opportunity to expand one character in particular, Mel Sharples from Martin Scorcese's drama "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (starring Ellen Burstyn [she won an Oscar], Kris Kristofferson, Diane Ladd, Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster). Thanks to Vic, the character of Mel smoothly adapted from his dramatic origins into his new home of sit-com hi-larity... one of the rare attempts of that kind to succeed.

RIP
Vic. Oh, and kiss my grits.

Smart meta-data displaying and KISS

Smart meta-data displaying and KISS 04/04/2005 01:47 PM

Paolo (of course - as he usually is) is right.

Clearly we need to build software for humans - not geeks.

As Roland points out - the allure of structured blogging or data blogging (or whatever you call it) - is strong for us geeky types who want as much meta-data as we can get.

This has been a challenge we've faced at ourmedia.org - which is trying to serve BOTH geeky types who want ALL the meta-data and simple digital creator - humans - who are often intimidated by anything more than just name, rank and serial #.

Or is that the Army?

In fact I once had someone put it - flatly - "there's no way in hell I'm filling out all those fields" (this also - BTW - is one of the complaints people are having with Yahoo 360 - but that's another story of acceptance, learning curves and the value of profile data.)

Well anyway - I have an idea/proposal to solve this conunndrum.....

I call it 'Smart meta-data display'.

And by smart, here's what I mean......

First of all "Canter's Rule #1 of great user interface design"

NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Don't yah think it's time we stoped building ONE interface for all people - for a wide range of users? Don't yah think it's time we recognized the fact that not all people are geeks OR humans? Perhaps our software can be BOTH, or support 3 or 4 different kind of users - with paralell UIs?

So to that ends - I propose that we start asking these users "what sort of user are you?" ARE YOU A GEEK OR WHAT?

Then we can fashion the software around them, instead of asking them to bend over to the arbitrary set of rules we determine BEFORE we've even met them.

Part #2 is - "based upon what kind of meta-data it is - ONLY display the fields that are absolutely relevant to ths situation."

So in ourmedia.org (for instance) we should ONLY display meta-data relevant to say 'Video:documentaries' and NOT display 'Video:RockVideo' meta-data or 'Video:Cartoon' meta-data.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a hierarchical taxonomy I'm proposing - rather it is a flat two level taxonomy which HIDES fields which are not relevant.

This is what we're planning to get to in ourmedia.org - in about a month or two.

Alan Kay used to refer to 'opening up the hood of the word processor'. If a human an't figure out how to push the lever to the side while pulling up the hood, then they probably shouldn't be fucking with the engine.

Same goes here.

As long as we put up 'tabs' or some simple form of occlusion - it'll be fine, our humans will be spared the complexity and us geeks will get our meta-data fields.

So same goes for this data blogging/structured blogging issue.

On one hand we NEED to collect the data, while on the other hand - we coudl lose our constituents. I'm sure there's some subtle balance we can strike.
