Agents of Change

Agents of Change 09/16/2004 11:14 AM
Agents of Change by Patrick Thibodeau
http://snipurl.com/8xzn

Autonomous agents could one day play a key role in everything from setting market prices to creating more resilient networks. Over the past year, NASA has been uploading software into the Earth Observing-1 satellite, turning it into a testbed for autonomous agents. The agents -- software programs that are able to learn and can function independently -- are used to manage experiments and operate the spacecraft. The effort is part of a technology initiative that researchers say will reshape IT over the course of many years. Autonomous agents have the potential to become an extraordinarily powerful technology, with the capacity to learn, experiment and act independent of human control. Agents could ultimately improve productivity, increase software reliability and change the operation of markets, particularly supply chains.

DIET Agents
http://diet-agents.sourcefor ge.net

The DIET Agents platform has been released as Open Source. It is a light-weight, multi-agent platform for decentralised computing. A bottom-up design was used to ensure that the platform is lightweight, scalable, robust, adaptive and extensible. It is especially suitable for rapidly developing peer-to-peer prototype applications and adaptive, distributed applications that use bottom-up or nature-inspired techniques. The platform is available from the DIET Agents website. The website also provides other resources, such as details about the design philosophy, a tutorial, API documentation, access to mailing lists and a basic visualiser.

MIT Media Lab: Software Agents
http://agents.media.mit. edu/index.html

The Software Agents Group of the MIT Media Laboratory "investigates computer systems to which one can delegate tasks." Software agents are different from conventional software because they are "long-lived, semi-autonomous, proactive, and adaptive." Software Agents Group focuses on creating software that "acts as an assistant to the user rather than a tool, learning from interaction and proactively anticipating the user's needs." The website describes the group's various projects that use "common sense reasoning" to Enable the Semantic Web, to improve video came design, or to Find Cultural Differences in Text. Many of the descriptions include screenshots or video footage demonstrating the group's work, along with related publications.
Various conference papers and journal article are also posted in the Publications section of the website. The resources section provides links to websites describing the Open Mind and ConceptNet projects, which form the foundation of the group's work. Never trust gate agents...

Never trust gate agents... 01/26/2004 12:43 PM

I remember learning this lesson in the past. NEVER TRUST GATE AGENTS. My Lufthansa flight from Zurich to Munich was over an hour delayed. My transfer was very short and I thought I would miss my flight so I asked them to route me through Frankfurt. They told me all flights out of Munich were late and I would be OK. We arrived in Munich and we walked off the plane and were told to walk up an escalator going the wrong direction. Then at the top of the escalator, the door was locked and we had a pile-up. I heard cussing in a variety of languages. It was funny. We got out and all of the displays for connecting flights were blank.

I went to the gate, and of course the flight had left. I went to the service counter and I got the "are you stupid?" look and was told that I should take the next flight to Frankfurt.

Anyway, I better go board my next flight on my Lufthansa hub-a-thon...

US Agents raid p2p homes

US Agents raid p2p homes 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
US Attorney General John Ashcroft reported that US agents had raided the homes of 5 people suspected of illegally trading copyrighted material. Agents raided homes in Texas, Wisconsin and New York, and seized computers involved.

Ashcroft, viewed by many as a hard-line Attorney General, remarked that "P2P does not stand for 'permission to pilfer'". He also commented that the he believed that the DoJ shouldn't turn a blind eye whilst piracy on such a large scale was taking place.

The targets of the raids were users of popular file sharing program, Direct Connect. The 5 people were acting as hubs; hubs are the Kazaa equivalent of "super-nodes" - users sharing massive quantities of files. Ashcroft said that each of the 5 hubs had 40 petabytes of data in them (ed - this figure seems massively in-correct - and would more likely be 40 gigabytes - perhaps terabytes. The DC website claims to have only just reached 1 petabyte of data network-wide.).

The DoJ hopes to reduce the spread of illegal piracy by taking down these main hubs of copyrighted material distribution. Asides from a physical effect, these raids haev a large psychological effect on the p2p community, as the RIAA and the MPAA have learned to their advantage. Record labels and associations have initiated about 4000 lawsuits over the last 2 years, most of them being settled out of court for $5000.

Yesterday evening, after a few too many cocktails with lovely people from work and an emergency Italian meal, we walked back towards Charing Cross to catch the tube only to see a van full of police officers looking weird and mischievous while playing the theme tune to Mission Impossible incredibly loudly and driving up and down the Strand. They all looked about seventeen, and like they were wearing their dads' uniforms. These are not the uniformed whores from Morrissey's The World is Full of Crashing Bores and that's quite nice. I wasn't scared of them or anything. But I wasn't exactly filled with confidence either...

Competition in Social Networks of Agents

Competition in Social Networks of Agents 09/25/2004 07:43 PM
A new TRN article discusses a new quantitative model of agent competition. The new model has potential uses in many fields including the optimization of communication and control within robot collectives. Traditional game theory has limitations in describing complex interaction in collectives of intelligent agents. The new theory allows the agents to make choices based on incomplete information. Even though mistakes are made, each agent has access to the knowledge and experiences of its neighbors allowing the collective to evolve complex dynamics quickly. One of the more interesting results is that the a scalable leadership system of "hubs" within the collective evolves spontaneously. For a more in-depth look at the theory and research see the original research paper: Competition in Social Networks: Emergence of a Scale-free Leadership Structure and Collective Efficiency (PDF format). The research was done by M. Anghel, Zoltan Toroczkai, Kevin E. Bassler, and Gyorgy Korniss. It was funded by grants from the Department of Energy and National Science Foundation.

US federal agents raid file-sharers

US federal agents raid file-sharers 06/05/2005 11:48 PM

United States law enforcement agents raided a series of servers allegedly hosting file-sharing servers. Operation D-Elite targeted sites supporting files using the BitTorrent protocol, focusing especially on the EliteTtorrents site. "Torrents" make files available in many small sections, which increases uploading and downloading speeds.

The action follows a well-publicized complaint by the Motion Picture Association of America ( MPAA ), who criticized the wide availability of torrent versions of the new Star Wars movie.

The Justice Department wouldn't comment on how officials zeroed in on Elitetorrent's biggest players, but ICE's Sevel credited the MPAA, which somehow got a line on the site's server logs.
"The MPAA provided us with information that led us to the logs and data for the servers ... the logs for the users as well as the uploads and downloads," said [ICE supervisory agent Jim] Sevel. The organization did not just provide a list of IP addresses of file swappers -- which is easy to get on any peer-to-peer network -- but found some of "the actual records from the server," Sevel said.

The raids were carried out by several agencies acting in concert, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the FBI , organized by Homeland Security .
