Computers Make You Sick 09/09/2004 12:33 PM
Not feeling so good? Perhaps you should blame your computer. A new study says that three out of every four office workers have health problems because they're not properly trained to use their computer. The problems are pretty obvious: back problems, eyesight problems or headaches. As this becomes a bigger and bigger problem, the suggestion is that corporations need to be more proactive in training people on good computing and good ergonomics. Of course, none of this seems particularly new, and many companies already have ergonomics groups that make sure people are well set up to use their computer in a healthy manner. At some point, good computing practices and good ergonomics are going to be issues that people are trained in at an early age -- and not at the office. However, in the meantime, companies who want to protect their employees' eyes, back and head might want to do a better job ensuring good computing ergonomic practices.

Viagra Maker Sick Of All The Spam

Viagra Maker Sick Of All The Spam 08/03/2004 04:17 PM
Pfizer, the folks who brought you Viagra, are apparently sick of all the V1*4gRa ads in their email inboxes as well, and have decided it's time for them to do something about it. They're trying to shut down bogus websites and spammers claiming to sell Viagra, and get to the point where someone at Pfizer, with a legitimate reason, will be able to send out an email again that mentions Viagra without having it shot automatically into a spam blackhole.

Hijacked Computers Responsible For

Hijacked Computers Responsible For
One-Third Of All Spam
12/03/2003 03:44 PM
Plenty of stories have been written about how many spammers are now using hijacked machines infected with some sort of trojan horse program to send out their spam. However, someone from an anti-virus company is saying that these "Remote Access Trojans (RATs)" are now respo nsible for one-third of all spam. Ouch. Of course, they don't back this up with any evidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. They seem to be getting plenty of publicity for this statement - but don't give any suggestions on how to solve this problem. If they're hyping it so much, you'd think those same articles would tell people how to protect themselves. Since the issue is so widespread, and education is unlikely to help, you have to wonder if a better solution is to have the broadband ISPs help out by determining which machines have been turned into "zombies" and alerting the owners.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

I am now getting 2,000+ spams a day. There are 1,440 minutes in a day The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....

I've been sick this past week, but that hasn't stopped me from testing applications for Lockergnome. In between trips to the toilet, I stumbled upon Huminity. I'd point you directly to its site, but I don't want you to install it. In fact, I want you to tell everybody on the PLANET not to install it. Why? Because it just raped my address book. I guess I didn't take their privacy policy literally: 'Contacts are notified by a one-time e-mail notification about their inclusion in the Huminity network.' WTF?! Assume that when you install the program, the people in your contacts list will be notified with no further warning. Sick! Well, if you got a message from me telling you to join this network, let me use this space to WARN YOU to avoid this site / software at all cost....

PCs out sick more than users

PCs out sick more than users 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo. A survey of 2,500 UK e-mail users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate e-mails among the spam in their inboxes. Spam is a problem for all e-mail users but some companies are hit harder than others.

Are we sick of Google yet? Expect to get even sicker as the Google IPO becomes an exercise in futility for the company and the investment community at large. The reason why this has turned into a laughable fiasco is because the investment bankers, the brokers, and the middlemen have decided to queer this deal in any way they can. That's it. I've decided. I'm switching. In the very near future (after taxes are computed, reported, and paid) I'm putting one of my Thinkpads (the T21 running Linux) and my oldish G4 Apple Powerbook (15" 550MHz) up for sale. Using the funds from those sales and a bit of other cash, I'll be buying a new 15" Powerbook. This has been a long time coming. In the nearly 2 years since I wrote that reivew, I've upgraded it a bit....
