AOL Rethinks Enterprise IM Strategy

AOL Rethinks Enterprise IM Strategy 06/23/2004 05:54 AM

America Online is shying away from the enterprise instant messaging market, leaving corporate real-time communications to the likes of IBM and Microsoft. On Tuesday, AOL announced that customers who are currently using AIM Enterprise Gateway product will be migrated to IMlogic's IM Manager solution, signaling the beginning of a wider initiative to shift the burden of enterprise software development onto certified partners.

    Strategy 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

In response to Andrew Orlowski's piece for The Register that intimated that, as a strategic move on Joi Ito and Neoteny's part, we were showered with "advanced publicity" (where advanced publicity includes wining and dining and, oddly, showing me a cork trick) prior to the investment, I have only one comment: Mr. Orlowski, please get your facts straight. It was this stuffed Domo Kun -- presented to me by the cunning folks at Neoteny -- that was the backbone of the deal. I witheld posting this photo until now out of fear that our deal, and their interaction with us, would be totally transparent.

    mena and ben

As to being called a "cute, but strangely synthetic twosome," I can only venture to guess that Orlowski got the "White Stripes of the weblogging world" memo. Synthetic? God, if only.

You would think, based on the way that Orlowski phrases things, that Joi making me wear the latest Shibuya fashions and having me promote weblogging at Japanese functions is a bad thing. As if it makes him the Lou Pearlman of the weblogging industry!

What's wrong with an executive showing a little flair?

    Apple's DLA strategy 07/26/2004 11:07 PM

Apple just announced a new iTunes mobile version that Motorola will load onto their "mass-market music phones" in the first half of next year. TheFeature's Carlo Longino gives his quick take on the deal:

Plenty of handsets today are capable of playing mp3s, but presumably none do it with the ease and grace -- or inherent coolness -- of Apple's products. It's an interesting move for Apple, which has said in the past the iTunes music store is a loss leader designed to help sell iPods. Presumably, they want to take new Moto phone users and turn them into iPod buyers... That, or this is just the first step towards the much-clamored-for wireless iPod.

    [BoingBoing]

    Marc's bit.....

    See! I told you so!

You think Apple still thinks of themselves as a computer company? I doubt it. They've been milking the Mac and their users for years and they're about to launch their entirely new model - which will be based upon enabling people's digital lifestyles.

Music is just the first step. And creativity.

You'll soon see .Mac and Rendevouz play a big part in Apple's comprehensive solution for the digital convergence. Shared calendars for the family, tied into your vacation albums and home movies. Throw in nutrional guides, pick-up and drop-off schedules and after-school activities - and we'll finally have iCommunity.

Apple is showing the world - right now - that end-user's experiences actually DO count.

That's why the Mac was always the best and why the iPod is the best. They're doing our R&D for us!

To many, the term "portal" is just another enterprise software buzzword, a consequence of being thrown around so casually that it means everything and nothing. But a really great portal can be the vehicle for a powerful set of functions that are vital to companies large and small.

Even though he used a comprehensive Microsoft Word stylesheet to ensure maximal control over the content, a lot of stuff didn't survive the transition to Quark. Crazy, huh? Here's a guy who's capable of writing directly in XML and transforming to HTML -- that's how he built the slideshow he's showing us -- and his book is stuck in a publishing bottleneck. In the short run this may be a Bob Glushko problem, but really, it's an MIT Press and Quark problem. ...

From A Second Tier Chinese Portal Site
    To An Enterprise Software Powerhouse?
    05/04/2004 03:56 AM
Business Week is running an article looking at the changing strategies of chinadotcom. The company, which had always been a second tier portal site in China (not as popular as Sina, Netease or Sohu), is now trying to completely reinvent itself. They're selling off that going nowhere portal business, and are desperately trying to become an enterprise software player in the Chinese market. To do so, they've been using some of the cash they've been hoarding (from a boom-time IPO on the NASDAQ) to buy up struggling western enterprise software makers like Pivotal and Ross Systems. While the article seems to indicate this is a good strategy, they don't make it clear why. Going from a second tier portal to a consolidation play of widely distributed, previously failed, out-of-date enterprise software products seems like a shift sideways, rather than up.
