Are federated identity projects
stalling?
06/23/2004 04:51 AM

Last January (see editorial links below) we brought you the results of a survey by PingID about people's "federated identity" projects. PingID created and supports SourceID, the open source multi-protocol project for enabling identity federation, so it does have an interest in keeping tabs on federation projects. To that end, it's now doing quarterly surveys to gauge the "state of federation" in the marketplace.

Identity Using Web Services
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

At last week's Catalyst Conference, Burton Group CEO Jamie Lewis kicked off the proceedings by identifying Service Oriented Architecture as the hot new area for identity management. Vendors, though, indicated that regulatory compliance was going to be the theme over the next year. Both will be big topics, but there was one announcement that I considered the bombshell of this event and it wasn't in either area.

The politics of identity projects

The politics of identity projects 01/23/2004 02:27 PM
I received a note this week from a reader asking for suggestions to a problem that had come up with an identity project. Specifically, the reader said: "We are looking into federation to help with political roadblocks that derailed our first solution of having a single Global Core Directory Service with edge directories and databases using meta connectors." In other words, the technology was the easy part.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

The New Orleans WPA Photograph Collection exclusively shows photographs of depression-era projects from Louisiana, so there's a whole set of WPA projects -- from the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, to venerated Doubleday Field, to the beautiful but obscure Border Station in Naco, AZ -- that you just won't see here. Nevertheless, if you take the time to explore this site you will find some truly wonderful photographs< /a>. Some are more technical surveyor-style photographs, but others are akin to the realist style being carved out at the time by folks like Walker Evans< /a>, who actually did do some photography for the Farm Security Administration (another New Deal-era project).
