I'll be out of
town and offline for a couple of days, so I thought I'd take a day to
think about where to go next with How to Save the World.
Therefore please consider this as a kind of 'open thread' and tell me
what you'd like to see here next. And to provoke your thinking here
are
four more questions to ponder:
- Without getting into the ethics of the case, and without
blaming the media, please explain why so many people care so much
about
that one singular right-to-die case in Florida?
- What's a
better name for 'the environment' that is less separate in connotation
from human civilization?
- Why does it break our heart to throw out teddy bears
and
other stuffed animals, even if they're not childhood toys with
memories
attached to them?
- How could we effectively teach online
the critical skills that take a lot of practice and one-on-one
coaching? I'm referring to skills like effective listening,
collaboration, and even meditation. It seems to me our inability to do
this well is the greatest limitation today of the Internet as an agent
of change.

RDF questions
RDF questions

Danny
Ayers: Of course if Atom was expressed in an RDF-friendly
syntax* then FOAF and every other RDF language could be used
directly in Atom without having to jump through hoops.
Danny, a few questions. For the basis of my questions,
presume a comparison against
RSS 1.0, which
unquestionably is an RDF friendly vocabulary.
- I embedded FOAF inside of my feed. Wouldn't the syntax
for embedding FOAF inside of dc:creator be pretty much the
same? In other words, wouldn't it be the same amount of
"hoops", or lack thereof?
- To me, the killer app of metadata is query. If I were to
switch from atom:name to foaf:name, people would have to update
their XPath
queries in order to access the data in its new place. How
would RQL handle
this? Wouldn't they also have to update their
queries?
To me, this gets at the heart of the value proposition for
RDF. What I hear is that it essentially provides
extensibility for free. I'd just like to see this promise
expressed in tangible terms.

10/28/2003 11:07 PMIt seems like every time Apple releases a minor update, the mac
lovers from all over exaggerate their upgrades into gifts from god
that made their computers faster, their bodies sexier, and their lives
richer.
Not being a huge Apple fanboy myself, I just want the thing to
work, to come close to the speed of my PC, and to be more stable. It
looks like Panther is the first release
that lived up to the hype, for me at least. My powerbook seems
downright peppy and I haven't seen a swirling beachball since I
upgraded. Mail and iChat finally seem stable and Mail isn't going
unresponsive when I have more than one window open. I finally see what
everyone was raving about with Expose, having a quick keyboard
shortcut to get to other windows on a crowded monitor is a
lifesaver.
I haven't dived in much deeper than that, but so far I'm very happy
with the $130 package.

yet more irrelevant questions
yet more irrelevant questions
09/10/2004 04:24 PMSo, shamefully, I've contributed to
this irrelevant
question blog ("Mr. President, how many times have you been
arrested?"), but I can't begin to describe fully how depressing this
presidential campaign has been.
Why do we waste attention on these ridiculous questions?
I'm sure Mr. Bush's record was nothing to be proud of -- his drinking
problem is well documented, and these things go together. But I'm also
sure he is no longer that man -- and for anyone who has seen someone
overcome that demon, you know the courage this requires. So I really
don't care how many times he was arrested, I don't care if he used
power to escape his obligations in the Reserve -- whether he should be
our President depends only upon whether the policies he will pursue
are good for this nation.
Likewise, re Mr. Kerry: I am sure he demonstrated unimaginable courage
in volunteering to serve his country in an unpopular war, and then
mustering the courage to articulate brilliantly the reasons why that
war was wrong. But we're not electing a captain for a military unit --
if shots are fired, he will follow orders, not give them -- and while
it would be great if he could find a way to articulate why this war
was wrong, the presidency is not a reward for great Senate testimony.
Whether he should be our President depends upon whether the policies
he will pursue are good for the nation.
So why can't we actually talk about the conflict in these policies?
I'm confident about that choice, but I would love my view to be
challenged by real arguments, and a focus on real issues. CBS almost
seems proud of their idiotic story. Shame on CBS. Shame on us.

two questions for Mr. Nader
two questions for Mr. Nader
03/06/2004 01:51 AMRalph Nader has apparently decided to run for President. So says his
website,
votenader.org (which
doesn't seem to render well on Mac browsers, but which my Dad reports
renders quite well on a Windows machine. Don't look for Ralph's
presidential campaign at
Nader2004.org. That domain has
been captured by a pro-Nader Nader-critic (which I count myself as),
and is a graphic version of the argument I made earlier.)
This is obviously depressing to folks like me who, while admirers of
the good that Nader did in the world, and admirers of more of his
policies than the other candidates in the race, believe the
consequence of his being in this race will simple be to increase the
probability that President Bush will have a second term.
So two questions for Mr. Nader:
(1) Do you agree that even if it would be best if you were President,
it would be second best if a Democrat were President rather than
President Bush?
(2) If so, then will you promise that if 2000 repeats itself -- if it
is clear that you are not going to be elected president, but probable
that votes for you will deny the Democrat of the Presidency -- then
you will ask your supporters to vote for someone else?
Because if Mr. Nader can answer both questions "yes," then I'm all for
his candidacy. His views, his integrity, and (except for one important
gap) his judgment certainly deserve to stand on the stage with any
Democrat, and with President Bush.

New Bluetooth Crack
New Bluetooth Crack
06/05/2005 11:47 PMHappy Friday:
Cryptographers have discovered a way to hack Bluetooth-enabled
devices even when security features are switched on. The discovery may
make it even easier for hackers to eavesdrop on conversations and
charge their own calls to someone else's cellphone.
"Our attack makes it possible to crack every communication between
two Bluetooth devices, and not only if it is the first communication
between those devices," says Shaked.
Check out the time required to pull this off:
They show that once an attacker has forced two devices to pair,
they can work out the link key in just 0.06 seconds on a Pentium
IV-enabled computer, and 0.3 seconds on a Pentium-III. "This is not
just a theoretical break, it's practical," says Schneier.

Leggio said of underage drinking. How dangerous? Well apparently
dangerous enough that one affluent Kansas City community has decided
that it is best to have police spy on teens during high school
basketball games. Oh it gets better, apparently a carload of teens is
enough for a Lenexa cop to follow you! So the parents should be up in

FeedDemon Crack
FeedDemon Crack
06/18/2004 09:27 AMDave
Winer and Evan
Williams commented that the people who shout the loudest are often
the ones who have no basis for their anger. I'm reminded of this fact
by an email I received this morning. Here's a quote:
"Fix your piece of s--- program! I upgraded to
FeedDemon 1.10 and it crashes with 'Win32 device error.' Did you even
test this s---?"
I've actually received a number of emails (and one forum post)
about this bug, but I have no plans to fix it. Why? Because the
error message only appears if you upgrade a cracked
version of FeedDemon 1.0. This is a deliberate error
message that FeedDemon 1.10 displays when it detects that you upgraded
from a specific cracked version of FeedDemon 1.0.
That's right, people who use a pirated version of
FeedDemon are emailing me for support. It never ceases to amaze me
when people not only steal from me, but also expect me to spend my
time answering their questions. And more often than not, the email
I've received about this problem reads like something a drunk teenager
would write.
I've written
