Carlyle Group To Buy Part Of KDDI
Carlyle Group To Buy Part Of KDDI
06/22/2004 04:34 AMJapanese mobile carrier KDDI has been trying to sell their DDI Pocket
division for many months (leading to the inevitable joke/question of
whether or not KDDI minus DDI will be simply known as "K"?). DDI
Pocket offers the personal handyphone system, which is popular in
Japan. It's sort of a cheap approximation of a mobile phone system,
but has found new life in supplying wireless data access to Japanese
users. The expected buyer from the beginning of all this talk has
always been Kyocera, who already owned a small piece of DDI pocket.
Despite denials, it looks like Kyocera is buying up DDI pocket, but
they've brought in quite the powerhouse partner - which will actually
make them the smaller player in the deal. The Carlyle Group has
announced that they'll
b
e teaming up with Kyocera to buy DDI Pocket. The Carlyle Group,
of course, is known for hiring up big shot political insiders and
other world leaders (such as Lou Gerstner) so they certainly have a
few connections up their sleeves. They'll now own 60% of the firm and
apparently are looking to
bring
the technology to developing countries that might not have the
infrastructure for a full mobile phone system, but could find the PHS
system useful. KDDI, in the meantime, will focus on their real mobile
phone market in Japan, which was starting to eat into the DDI Pocket
market anyway. It's an interesting look at how a technology that is
becoming obsolete in an advanced society could present huge
opportunities for developing nations instead. As the second link
above shows, this also shows how Japanese firms are increasingly open
to being bought by foreign firms -- something that's been rare in the
past (though, Ripplewood's buyout of J-Phone's landline business in
Japan suggests a trend).

Kyocera AP-K303T: Emergency Phone
08/02/2004 10:25 AM
If you own a
phone where a single button press can call the police, you better hope
that there's a keylock on that thing or you might have a lot of
splainin to do, right? DDI, Kyocera, and Toyota have teamed up
to create the AP-K303T, marketed to children, women, and the elderly
-- you know, those that are the sworn enemies of all burly attack men.
I like one-button emergency calling, but why does it have to be in a
goofy, less-than-full-featured phone? Even we strapping, strong gaijin
need the help of an able-bodied sailor policeman from
time to time.
Oh, did I mention this is Japan-only? This is Japan-only.

06/21/2004 07:28 AM
Although I'd
certainly trade them for a single camera with twice the resolution,
this A5502K from Kyocera is the first phone I can recall seeing with
two cameras, one in the front like a normal, selfless,
god-fearing camera, and another next to the LCD for taking vain,
indulgent pictures of yourself. The other functions of the phone don't
look half-bad either, although I wouldn't expect to see it in the US,
you know, ever.

Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset
Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset
03/14/2005 05:46 PMBoingo and Kyocera said they'll work together on a combined cellular
and Wi-Fi handset: The device will enable seamless roaming between
cellular networks and hotspots. The idea is to support both voice and
data services that can continue operating while a user is moving from
the range of a cellular network into a hotspot. The phones will
integrate Boingo's roaming software for connectivity and
authentication to hotspots. Such an integrated device will make it
much easier for customers to use voice or other services over Wi-Fi if
only because the Boingo application will help with hotspot login and
authentication. The press release also is touting the benefit such a
combined device will offer to users of higher bandwidth cellular
applications, such as streaming video, because such services will
operate better over the higher speed Wi-Fi networks. The key to this
announcement, however, will be seeing cellular operators choose to
sell the resulting device. Most of the combined cellular/Wi-Fi
handsets that operators have said they'll be selling so far purposely
don't support voice on the Wi-Fi component. Some operators have
discussed combined cellular/Wi-Fi PDAs, which would allow users to
download a voice over IP client and use it over Wi-Fi but the service
wouldn't be integrated with the cellular network. Most cellular
operators aren't promoting the use of voice over Wi-Fi, even though
most also say that voice over Wi-Fi is no threat to their cellular
businesses. Boingo also said that it, along with Kyocera, have joined
BridgePort Networks' MobileIgnite Alliance. BridgePort describes the
alliance as a group of companies "committed to standards-based,
interoperability" of mobile voice over IP convergence solutions. In
reality though, MobileIgnite pushes the use of BridgePort's solutions
to support the integration of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. While the
end result makes more sense than UMA because BridgePort's solution
takes the most advantage of the efficiencies available by carrying
voice over broadband IP networks, the last time I talked to BridgePort
the solution required cellular operators to integrate BridgePort's
products into their networks. While possible, I think that BridgePort
may fight an uphill battle to convince many cellular operators to
deploy a solution that offloads traffic from their networks onto
hotspots that are potentially owned by another operator....

Hoping to cash
in on the iPod mini craze (and you know, I've heard more stupid ideas
before), Kyocera is selling five new color-matched versions of the
four-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras. Color-matched, that is, to the
iPod mini. And while I'm sure they'll be super hot (at least to those
fashion-forward iPod adopters), getting one into the States may not be
so easy -- the cameras will only be available in Apple's Ginza store
and the online Apple Store (but for Japan-shipping only? Unknown!)
(Thanks, Jon!)
