It Ain't Easy To Create The Next
EverCrack
07/16/2004 01:59 PMA few years ago, all anyone in the gaming industry could talk about
was how multi-player online games were the next generation of games.
There were all the success stories about EverQuest and Ultima Online,
and the greed factor set in: players had to first buy the game. Then,
they needed to pay a monthly subscription fee to keep playing the
game. It's no surprise that everyone wanted to offer such games:
upfront fees plus recurring fees. However, the other side of that
equation is that it's costly to keep those games running. There's the
technical side, of course, but also the customer support issues.
Plus, with so many multi-player games out there, the market started to
get a bit saturated. These days, many companies are
slowly
backing away from the space, including EA who dumped the latest
version of Ultima Online, in favor of improving the existing version.
The space isn't dead, of course. There are still quite a few success
stories that continue to do well. It's just that it's pretty
difficult to create new multi-player games that will get people
addicted.

Xeni Jardin:
BoingBoing reader Prodigal Tom says, "This is a fascinating article
about deaf and totally neglected children in Nicaragua inventing their
own sign language. I was also psyched because I learned there is an
actual job called a psycholinguist! There's also a great point about
how the language has evolved, so the younger members have a slightly
different version than the originators."

surpassing the levels on traditional comedies and dramas, according to
a study released Friday by a conservative media watchdog, the Parents
Television Council.

Tonal Gravity
06/24/2005 06:57 PMGeorge Russell is probably the foremost American composer. He was
jazz's first theoretician, and remains its most important innovator.
His ideas led directly to the conception of three seminal jazz albums
in 1959: Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, John Coltrane's Giant Steps, and
Russell's own New York, New York. For the first time in nearly a
decade, Russell has released a new recording. Today he turns 82.
