O'Reilly: PHP Web Services Without SOAP

O'Reilly: PHP Web Services Without SOAP 10/31/2003 09:26 AM

Web services have to be one of the most underused parts of web development, especially in the corporate world. I can't say I've really heard of an instance where a (non-internet) company was using them for much of anything. Well, if you've been hesitant to leap into this powerful tool because you had to learn your way around SOAP, then thi s new article might just interest you.

O'Reilly: Calling SOAP Servers from JS
in Mozilla
06/24/2005 03:03 PM
OnLamp.com has a new article posted today that aims to show you how to call SOAP servers from Javascript in Mozilla.

Traditional web pages interact with the server only when generating a page or submitting a form. This is fine in some cases, but in others it causes problems for a webmaster. For example, there is no way to validate a user's input against a database midway through filling out the form, or to populate elements based on the user's input, unless a large amount of data is sent along with the page. In many cases this is a prohibitive amount of data, such a multimegabyte or even gigabyte database.

They give a sample SOAP service in PHP for you to connect to (using PHP5s built-in libraries it seems) and then proceed to jump right over to the Javascript. I'm pretty sure that this functionality won't work outside of Mozilla, but it's still a pretty cool little hack for anyone who uses it. SOAP services (web services, for that matter) are growing more and more each day, and, thankfully, more and more companies are getting on the bandwagon about it and opening up APIs for their information to be accessed simply and easily...

Using Amazon Web Services With PHP And
SOAP
11/11/2002 06:02 AM
Now, your favourite language and mine, PHP, has recently started shipping with support for XML-based remote procedure calls (including SOAP) over HTTP. This makes PHP ideal for developers looking to integrate Amazon Web Services into their Web applications. The only problem? Not too many people know how to do it. That's where this tutorial comes in. Over the next few pages, I'll be demonstrating how you can use PHP, in combination with Amazon Web Services, to add powerful new capabilities to your Web applications. Take a look. -- icarus

The fifth annual Forum XML, on November 12-14 in Paris, featured a consistent theme--that SOAP-based Web Services seem more than ever based on a contradiction, even as they are being positioned by vendors as a foundation for both loosely coupled systems and a new RPC architecture.

Web sites like Amazon and Google are applications. And Microsoft has demonstrated over and over again that a platform strategy beats an applications strategy every time. Once you have other companies building added value that relies on you, you have a kind of benign industry lock in that's a real competitive advantage. (That's why I bet that Microsoft's MapPoint eventually supplants AOL's MapQuest as the dominant resource for geographic information. Unless AOL gets off its duff and supports developers, of course.)

Soap 04/14/2004 07:57 AM
Spent most of yesterday evening wandering aimlessly in the local IKEA, having a Tyler Durden moment. It all looked so ugly, and... empty. Void of all emotions. Like a cage, built of warm colors and gentle wood.

My hair is now orange-ish. The hairdresser next to the office said that it was good to do something else than always the plain, average cut to the plain, average engineers.

Perhaps this all is fighting, refusal to become average.

Maybe it is futile, and I am just lying to myself.

A presentation summarizing REST and SOAP by Peter Drayton, Program Manager (CLR), Microsoft.

The thesis for my talk was that this area of intersection (RESTful SOAP) is actually a good thing, as it provides an opportunity for SOAP to learn valuable architectural lessons from REST, and an opportunity for REST to benefit from SOAP's widespread acceptance among corporate developers.

Soap Carving 03/08/2004 11:04 PM
What ever happened to soap carving? Soap carving has been around a long time, and is often quite beautiful, detailed or arresting. Still, it's surprising how often it's still suggested as a fun activity for kids, despite the involvement of sharp utensils. For more than 25 years, Ivory soap ran a national soap-carving contest as a public relations stunt created by the father of PR, Edward L. Bernays.

REST vs SOAP

REST vs SOAP 03/11/2003 11:53 AM
My POW, FWIW:
The sweet spot is GET and POST of XML Infomation Sets. REST's content independence and SOAP's transport independence are simultaneously both key strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Both contain speculative features that have not been widely adopted (e.g., DELETE? Content-Negotiation?). The most underrated feature of SOAP is asynchronous messaging.

REST + SOAP is a powerful combination.

Zend has posted a new press release about their latest partnership - with PayPal - to strengthen web services.

Zend Technologies, Inc., the PHP company, and creator of products and services supporting the development, deployment and management of PHP-based applications, today announced it collaborated with PayPal, a leading online payment company, to contribute updates to the open source PHP SOAP project, delivering a new version of PEAR::SOAP. PEAR::SOAP version 0.90 updated many previously known issues and vastly improved the module's WSDL and namespace support. By giving these improvements back to the PHP community, developers worldwide are better able to work with all Web Services from their PHP applications.

With the developers at PayPal being a major contributor to the PEAR::SOAP project, I can't wait to see what kind of improvements that are made...

Programming with Pear : A Short, Basic Tutorial If you haven't worked with the Pear database abstraction class then you really should. Now I know that everyone says that and we often don't bother -- "too hard", "it's a pain", etc. It's really not. Here's how I learned how to do it and what I recommend. Write a simple PHP app to do nothing more than list the contents of a table using the MySQL native functions. Go through and convert it line by line to the Pear equivalents. Here are the examples ... ==> Read Story Note: This is less of a tutorial and more of paired examples. Still at least I found it very useful since it clearly points out the difference between Pear and non-Pear database coding in PHP. And, yes Virgina, the # of lines of code is about the same.
