China launches Certnet2 high speed
Internet Backbone
12/28/2004 09:10 AMChina advanced its nation's communications infrastructure by launching
Cernet2, a high-speed Internet backbone.
Cernet2, a high-speed internet backbone, connects 25 universities in
20 cities. Cernet, or the China Education and Research Network, has
been able to achieve a monstrous speed of up to 40 gigabits per second
during a trial run conducted on 7 December. This is a record for
real-world applications, where the average speeds are about 2-10 GPS
for universities.
Cernet2 is anticipated to expand to cover 100 universities.
Cernet committee director Wu Jianping said in an interview with China
Daily, "We were a learner and follower in the development of the
first generation Internet, but we have caught up with world's leaders
in the next-generation Internet, become a first mover, and won respect
and attention from the international community."
The impact of China's educational network online puts the country into
the digital race globally and may be extended to industry and even
consumers, some experts say.

Wireless Data Currently About Ubiquity,
Not Speed
09/22/2004 02:58 PMWe've already joked about how all wireless data services, no matter
how fast,
start their
pricing at $80/month, in the hopes that business users with
expense accounts will sign up while the network provider works out all
their network and capacity problems. The prices eventually drop as
the provider feels better about the network and (much more
importantly) competitors have launched their own, faster, networks
also at the $80 price point. Still, in an interview about wireless
data offerings, the co-CEO of wireless data company Seven, provides an
interesting rationale for the $80 pricing. He basically admits that
it's too expensive for the power user, but
just fine for the casual
user. Seems a bit counter-intuitive, doesn't it? The power user,
of course, is also a bandwidth hog -- and the carriers don't want
bandwidth hogs clogging up these networks, so no matter what the
price, the speeds of most wireless data service offerings aren't
enough. However, for the more casual user, bandwidth isn't nearly as
big an issue. For the casual user signing up for wireless data plans,
the issue is ubiquitous connectivity -- and that's the target audience
for these users. So, the question being asked is the wrong one. The
interviewer is basically asking how they can justify charging
$80/month for "what amounts to a very slow DSL connection." The
answer (though, not this directly) is basically that users are buying
the ubiquity and the mobility -- not the speed.

Speed Limit Discovered For Writing Data
Speed Limit Discovered For Writing Data
04/21/2004 02:09 PMA recent experiment has determined that there is a
physical limit to how fast data can be written to a magnetic
drive. Of course, we're nowhere near that limit, and it's really
unlikely to matter at any point. Even if there were applications that
ever got anyone near that point, it's likely that we'll be on to some
other method of storage by that point. So, while it's a nice bit of
info, it doesn't seem to have much practical application.
