12/11/2003 01:40 AM In the best decision out of Motorola in years — now that
Chris Galvin has resigned — the Motorola Semiconductor Product
Sector will be spun off into its own independent corporation. After
years of mismanagement and dwindling mindshare, setting SPS free could
spark the rebirth of the sleepy chipzilla, but sadly for Apple and Mac
users the move has come too late to benefit Macintosh.

The current psychology of buying
semiconductor stock
06/16/2004 01:24 PMThe "buy" psychology has been -- and continues to be -- negative in
the semiconductor stock trade, largely due to fears of a 2005
slowdown. On balance, the sell side is baking in minimal growth for
2005 in the low single-digit area. So, the Street is fearful that
year-over-year growth rates will turn ugly in 2005.

07/30/2004 07:07 AM
The semiconducter
industry is taking it in the crotch when it comes to cellphones,
continually racing to cram more and more features into handsets that
oftentimes don't sell for as much as they cost to make -- at least
according to the EE Times, but hey, they would know, right? Still,
there seems to be a little sky-is-fallingism in the article, because
while the coming convergence of portable devices (MP3 players, phones,
cameras, PDAS, etc.) may cause fewer items to sell (with fewer profit
margins), it should continue to push the need for more and more
semiconducters and flash memory products as people continue to upgrade
to newer, more converged devices.
The gadgets may change, but the lust for new gadgets seems to stay
the same. Then again, I'm an idiot, so weigh those two things
together.

06/18/2004 04:15 PMInvesting in IT stocks of all kinds is not a business for the feint of
heart. This holds especially true in the semiconductor stock world.
Risks can be great, but so can the financial rewards. ITMJ stock
analyst Melanie Hollands, who has been following this for more than a
decade, offers some valuable inside information on this topic in an
article you might want to bookmark if you hold investments in this

Semiconductor Association Weighs in on
Chinese Standard
03/06/2004 01:49 AMThe Semiconductor Industry Association is calling on the Chinese
government to drop its proprietary Wi-Fi encryption mechanism: The
Chinese government recently said that only products that comply with
its own encryption scheme will be allowed in China and foreign
companies can only make gear based on the standard in partnership with
handpicked Chinese firms that are privy to the encryption technology.
I've noticed that recent pleas from foreign companies or groups to the
Chinese government tend to focus on why a Chinese standard would hurt
the Chinese market. They argue that the Chinese IT industry will slow
because Chinese firms won't be able to access innovations made by
companies around the world because they'll be required to stick to
their own unique standard. Maybe groups like the Semiconductor
Industry Association figure China doesn't care if its plan hurts
foreign companies but that it might care if its plan hinders its own
companies. We've been following developments on this issue and you can
read some recent news about the likelihood of a formal WTO complaint
here....
