Google risk: ads lone revenue source

Google risk: ads lone revenue source 05/04/2004 11:04 AM
Google Inc. made its name from Internet searches but made its fortune from Web advertising, a near-total reliance on a single revenue source that presents risks for prospective investors, analysts said Monday. As it marches toward an initial public offering, the Web search heavyweight appears to be following the lead of an earlier generation of Internet firms that bet the farm on online ads and lost when the dotcom bust saw demand for banner ads evaporate. In 2003, 95 percent of Google's revenue of $961.8 million came from a new type of targeted advertisements.

AP - When Nick Holonyak Jr. set out to create a new kind of visible lighting using semiconductor alloys, his colleagues thought he was "nuttier than hell." Today, his discovery of light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, are used in everything from DVDs to alarm clocks to the NASDAQ stock billboard in New York. Dozens of his students have continued his work, developing lighting used in traffic lights and other everyday technology.

Ward Cunningham, the inventor of wikis, is taking a job at Microsoft: he's put up a wiki page to solicit advice for surviving there.
You can have a huge impact on Microsoft's culture. Push yourself to the max. Prepare the family -- working at Microsoft is fun and I went overboard. Sometimes the family doesn't understand. Take days to yourself. Try to build friendships and get a mentor or two. That'll help.

SleepTracker Inventor Interviewed

SleepTracker Inventor Interviewed 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

sleept_int.jpgThe SleepTracker watch has been a total success from what I can divine. We actually called to get one in for review because so many people were asking about it and the company said they didn't have a single review unit to spare (I probably should have turned off Unskinny Bop while calling). Gear Live has an interview with Lee Loree, the inventor of the watch that helps you wake up at the optimal time.

The next night I allowed our dog back into our room.  3 times she woke me to where I sat up in bed and was visibly disturbed (I video tape the nights I run tests).
Kinky, but that's science for you.

German inventor may sue Apple over iPod 06/04/2004 12:26 PM
A German inventor named Andreas Pavel may hit Apple with lawsuits over the iPod, according to UK-based publication The Independent. Pavel patented a design for a portable music system he called the "Stereobelt" in the 1970s, and while it never went into production, Sony's Walkman did -- after Pavel filed his patent. Lawsuits ensued, and Sony recently offered Pavel a multimillion dollar payout to settle his long-standing disputes. Pavel is purportedly considering using his payout from Sony to fund litigation against Apple for the iPod in Italy and Canada, where his patents may still be valid.

Inventor of the Web knighted by British
monarch
07/22/2004 01:25 PM

For his visionary and organizational role in creating the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee was dubbed a knight by Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II dubbed Tim Berners-Lee a knight on Friday, in recognition of his contributions to the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee, in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, was dubbed a Knight Commander, the second highest rank of the Order of the British Empire. For Berners-Lee, a British citizen living in the United States, the knighthood marked the latest honor he has received since creating the protocols for the World Wide Web in the early 1990s.
Sir Timothy's response was wholly consonant with the spirit of the Web's creation :
"I am humbled by this great honor," Berners-Lee said. "The Web came about through an ongoing collaboration with my fellow investors and developers worldwide. Everyone in the Internet community should be recognized by this honor."
