Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

How can free software compete with
commercial developers?

How can free software compete with
commercial developers?
11/05/2003 10:55 AM
The amazing thing about the free vs. proprietary software race is that free software is in it at all. With all the resources larger proprietary software companies have at their command, you'd think their products would be unfailingly easy to use, virtually bug-free, and priced so low that no one would mind paying for them. But this is not the case. Why isn't it? You'd think a software company full of carefully-selected programmers, project leaders, market researchers, quality control personnel, professional documentation writers, and a technical support staff would have no trouble beating any open source project -- with both hands tied behind its corporate back -- even if it gave the open source project a 3 km lead in a 5 km race.

For most companies, data backup and recovery is a significantly more pressing issue now than it was just a few years ago. A challenging economic climate, new regulatory mandates, and a greater concern about risks from major disasters, among other factors, are fueling this concern. Fortunately, rapidly declining disk prices are allowing enterprises to augment their data-protection strategies using disk-based backup and recovery technologies, which enable a faster, more manageable and more reliable solution than traditional tape-backup technology. But most of the current disk-based solutions on the market are still cost-prohibitive for many companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses.

Being Kind to Software Developers or
"Why Make Extra Email for Yourself?"

Being Kind to Software Developers or
"Why Make Extra Email for Yourself?"
11/16/2002 10:08 AM
Being Kind to Software Developers or "Why Make Extra Email for Yourself?" I was just over on PHP Everywhere where I saw that Enygma, the person behind PHPDeveloper just lost his job. That just sucks. I don't know Enygma personally but I know just how hard it is to be out of work. And these days it's even harder. So best of luck to Enygma. (Suggestion to Enygma, link to a resume of yourself next time from your blog so people can see who you are and what you could do for them). Anyway I saw that Enygma just linked to an article on parsing RSS with PHP. That's obviously cool. So I went to check it out and NOWHERE in the article could I find a link to the entire code. NOWHERE. That just plain cruel. Every programming language has novices. Every language. What they did was write the article so you could put it together i.e. a subhead was "Function ParseRSS" and then a paragraph and then the code but that's, to me at least, mind bogglingly dumb. All this does is this: Make everyone have to work harder to use their code Cause novice developers to get confused It will almost certainly lead to one or more unwanted bugs from people that put it together wrong Lead to rants like this Cause the author to get more than usual emails from people saying "In this article I did X but it didn't work" So people, if you are going to write a programming article, just toss in a link to the full source code. Take a look at thsi article where I not only did it but also told you how to use php's source coloring function. [ Go ] It doesn't matter what language you are working in, having a link to the full code is always the right thing to do. BE KIND TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS ! Disclaimer: Today's early morning bitchy post was brought to you courtesy of a) lack of sleep b) a really bad week c) stupidity on the part of Zend in publishing articles this way; what were they thinking? And if they've done it this way forever then more shame on them

Copy Protection software Starforce
causing gamers headaches
07/12/2004 10:47 PM

Imagine you go out buy a Game install it play it several months and then remove it from your computer you would expect the game to clean up after itself. Apparently Starforce copy protection is embedded in some games and installs itself onto Gamers hard-drives and when the games are removed the Starforce code remains. This has led to performance issues and being these gaming companies assume every consumer is a criminal. They have decided invading these peoples computers is a good for business. If I wanted to copy a game I would just go on the net and download the cracked version. Gaming companies need to start treating their customers like customers instead of criminals. [Techdirt]

I recommend you read the article on Broadband Reports they have links to clean up tools.

06/17/2005 04:32 PM
FreeNSK interviewed open source developers Alexander Noé and Zeb who created some free software utilities for Plextor DVD recorders. Noé wrote PxScan and PxView for Windows, while Zeb ported them to GNU/Linux under the name PxLinux. The utilities send special commands to the drives, activating their special features, such as media quality checks. Unfortunately, someone wasn't happy with their efforts, as the parent company of Plextor sent them cease-and-desist letters accusing them of using "unfair commercial practices"...

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AM
Being the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly, popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.
