The Building Blocks of Culture

The Building Blocks of Culture 07/08/2004 08:38 PM

As a tie-in to Spider-Man 2, Spite Your Face created a short movie of Spidey battling Doc Ock, done entirely with Legos. It's a cracking good little romp, and it made me think of some of the other great Lego remixes I've seen, such as 2001: A Lego Odyssey and Monty Python Lego. Legos have become one of the great physical media for animation, from Michel Gonrdy's innovative music video for the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a Girl" to entire communities of Lego animators.

Why is that? Perhaps because Lego is the original remix toy. A Lego set isn't some finished plaything: it comes in pieces, and you get to build it yourself. And then, once you've built the model, you can unbuild it and put it back together in your own way. You can make mash-ups in which Harry Potter Lego characters meet Star Wars Lego characters at a car wash.

Think of Creative Commons as Lego for culture, helping the building blocks of creativity snap together in neat new ways.

Kepler - A Digital Library For Building Communities
http://kepler.cs.odu.edu/

The purpose of Kepler is to give any user the ability to easily self-archive publications by means of an "archivelet": a self-contained, self-installing software system that functions as an Open Archives Initiative data provider. Kepler archivelets are designed to be easy to install, use and maintain. Kepler is a perfect solution for those that need to be OAI-PMH compliant, but do not have the resources for more complex OAI-PMH software installations.

In this web site we document and make code available from an NSF supported project to develop Kepler for communities that wish to tailor their publication and search services and enforce configurable standards. Our long-term vision is to provide tools and software for communities to easily deploy digital libraries that are customized for their needs, can be populated, managed, and are "open" for development of future services. Intel Delivers Breakthrough PC
Technologies To Enhance Digital Home and
Office Experiences
06/25/2004 08:27 PM
“Improved Audio, Video and Graphics Enable Broader Set of PC Uses SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2004 - In one of the most significant PC platform changes in a decade, Intel Corporation today announced products that usher in a range of audio, video and other capabilities previously found only on specialty PCs. In addition to making the PC experience more entertaining and productive, these technologies pave the way for such emerging capabilities as High Definition (HD) video, 7.1 surround sound and robust file protection for office and home users. These technologies are helping create a new kind of PC, an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity, according to Louis Burns, vice president and general manager, Intel Desktop Platforms Group.”Just as an afterthought, that press release reminds me of what I dislike intensely about politicians- glittering generalities. “New technologies” and “digital revolution”. Hogwash! In a year we’ll look back and decide that the technology was just another evolutionery step in CPU design and that all those marvelous toys are just so much hype, since about 1% of it ever happened. Oh, the future is certainly bright enough, but look at the realities of it all: Intel has to accept AMD’s 64-bit chip code as the gold standard, their new chips are hobbled and flawed, and they’re pinning their hopes on dual-core chips that aren’t in fab yet, because they weren’t supposed to be produced until 2006. It’s pretty clear that Intel, for whatever reason, made a serious tactical error when it came to 64-bit desktop chips and now they’re trying ever so hard to catch up. I’ve never cared that much for Intel, it’s true. I simply think that they produce good chip concepts, but the execution is a little lame and the prices are too high by 40%. At least they make good motherboards (usually). And in all this time, they haven’t figured out their errors. Maybe they can come up with an entirely new bell or whistle to regain the lead, but I don’t know what it could be… Maybe direct I/O ports on the CPU? Who knows.I do know one thing- “an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity” doesn’t hold the promise of anything startlingly new and innovative, to me. I think they call it a ‘Home Theatre’ package.

BlackBoard one month after IPO

BlackBoard one month after IPO 07/30/2004 12:03 PM

Business Week has an article about BlackBoard 's financial stamina, following its June initial public offering ( IPO ). The perspective is financial, rather than pedagogical.

Blackboard's co-founders are young and are focused on building a company that can react with rapidly to what customers want. Jim Kabbani, former director of worldwide sales at Blackboard, says "There is constant improvement of product." Kabbani says when he worked at the company, which was created in a rowhouse in Washington, D.C., it was part of the fast-moving dot-com culture. He notes that unlike other startups at the time, it remained nimble enough to survive the depths of the bust.

Progress Report On National Digital Info Preservation Program

Laura Campbell, associate librarian for strategic initiatives at the Library of Congress, says of her work spearheading the LC's collaborative National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, "It's the best job I ever had." Campbell and her colleagues are finishing up their review of 22 proposals from potential preservation partners and are working with experts to construct a technical architecture for the preservation process. Nearly 5 terabytes of digital works characterized as "at risk" have been collected so far. They include Web pages that document recent events, such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the ongoing war in Iraq. Librarians used to worry about preserving access to books and periodicals, says Campbell, but with most Web sites staying up an average of only 44 days, preserving access to them is far more complicated. In addition, the copyright issues surrounding long-term preservation of digital journals, books, and audio and video material have yet to be resolved. "There may be technological solutions that make the management of restricted material much easier," says Campbell. Because so much about digital preservation is yet unknown, Campbell says the library's strategy is to learn by doing and be prepared to make corrections along the way. She credits the many experts she consulted during the planning phase of the program with impressing upon her the need for continuing flexibility: "It helped us realize that we would always be learning and adjusting," says Campbell.

As RSS & Syndication Trend Continues as Useful Way to Find & Organize Online News & Content, NewsGator Raises the Bar for Customers & the Industry

Denver, CO -- December 23, 2003 -- NewsGator Technologies has been chosen for the third annual EContent 100 List, EContent Magazine’s list of companies that matter most in the digital content industry. The EContent 100 selection process combines editorial talent from EContent and Information Today, Inc., and relies on their collective experience in various corners of the digital content landscape along with their exposure to the visible activities of digital content companies.

Flagship product NewsGator 1.3 is a news aggregator which runs inside Microsoft Outlook and retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, NNTP (Usenet) newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS or Atom syndication formats. NewsGator was selected for the content delivery category, which includes tools and solutions for delivering digital content – from aggregation software tools to content delivery networks – as well as for the secure digital payment strategies.

Other categories for this year’s EContent 100 include Classification and Taxonomy, Collaboration & Knowledge Management, Consulting Services, Content Creation, Production & Digital Publishing, Content Management, Digital Rights Management, Fee-Based Info Services, Intranets & Portals, Mobile Content and Search Engines & Technologies. "We are pleased to recognize NewsGator Technologies in our 2003 EContent 100,” said Michelle Manafy, Editor of EContent Magazine.  “We believe that it is tools like NewsGator that can bring syndicated content directly to a very wide audience, and open the door to new and exciting digital content distribution solutions.”

NewsGator 1.3 automatically integrates syndicated news items into Microsoft Outlook folders for users to access immediately or at a later time. New feeds are being published regularly, allowing NewsGator users to easily and seamlessly find and subscribe to new valuable content.   In two weeks at CES, NewsGator Technologies will be demonstrating the next generation of its products, which will dramatically extend its capabilities in the digital content marketplace.
