UK Current Affairs by Email 12/06/2003 10:53 AM
For any society, in any age, the study of politics ultimately comes down to one elemental question: how are people persuaded to acquiesce in a polity where the distribution of power is manifestly unequal and unjust, as it invariably is. -- The quote from David Cannadine that opened a recent Newsnight newsletter from Jeremy Paxman. Email may not be the sexiest 'net medium, but I wait daily for two witty, well informed summaries of UK current affairs; the second is Channel 4's Snow Mail. And weekly, there's the Guardian's Backbencher.

Shocking Laser Tag

Shocking Laser Tag 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

laser_shockers.jpgThe most interactive laser tag systems to date simply vibrate when shot, but stop short of inflicting any real pain. Herein lies their fatal flaw, and Gadget Shop has set out to fix this error with their Shocking Guns—a laser tag set that shocks the user when shot by an opponent. It offers two degrees of shock power and "may interfere with electrical devices such as pacemakers," if that weren't already obvious. Each $45 kit comes with two guns and two breastplates, as well as the six AAA batteries required for them.

Senators were told Iraqi weapons could hit U.S. U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said Monday the Bush administration last year told him and other senators that Iraq not only had weapons of mass destruction, but they had the means to deliver them to East Coast cities. If this is true, is he in trouble for saying it?

Shocker: People Realize That Internet
Affairs Are Damaging
04/19/2004 04:15 AM
For those who didn't yet figure it out, even an online "affair" can damage a relationship. That's what a new study says, though, I question the methodology. They study was only conducted with students who may have a fairly different definition of what constitutes a relationship than those out of college and in the working world. Still, as the study shows, even those who don't necessarily think of an online affair as "cheating," most still realize that it would hurt their partner to know about it. It seems pretty obvious that if something you're doing would hurt your partner that it's probably not going to do much good for the relationship.

Tracking Employees, Shocking Them

Tracking Employees, Shocking Them 09/24/2004 09:54 AM

CNet has a story up about the growing trend within corporations to use GPS-enabled phones to monitor and track employee whereabouts which features this lovely quote from Sanjay Shirole, CEO of one of the firms that makes the tracking software:

"There's no electro shock--yet," Xora CEO Sanjay Shirole said.

Ha ha, nice one, Sanjay! The only thing classier than creating a technology that will eventually be used to tie workers into virtual corrals - I'm not joking, it's in the article; called "geofences" - is to make a joke about using the system to abuse workers. Hilarious! Now that you've cracked wise about it, Sanjay, we can certainly rule out any possibility of it ever happening in the future.

Stanley Milgram's shocking new biography

Stanley Milgram's shocking new biography 06/14/2004 11:40 AM
The Man Who Shocked The World is a new biography about Stanley Milgram, the provocative social psychologist whose mind-blowing experiments three decades ago are still highly relevant in today's world of Abu Ghraib and Friendster. From the Milgram Web site, hosted by the book's author, Dr. Thomas Blass:
milgrambook"Controversy surrounded Stanley Milgram for much of his professional life as a result of a series of experiments on obedience to authority which he conducted at Yale University in 1961-1962. He found, surprisingly, that 65% of his subjects, ordinary residents of New Haven, were willing to give apparently harmful electric shocks-up to 450 volts-to a pitifully protesting victim, simply because a scientific authority commanded them to, and in spite of the fact that the victim did not do anything to deserve such punishment. The victim was, in reality, a good actor who did not actually receive shocks, and this fact was revealed to the subjects at the end of the experiment. But, during the experiment itself, the experience was a powerfully real and gripping one for most participants.

Milgram's career also produced many other creative, though less controversial, experiments; such as, the small-world method (the source of 'Six Degrees of Separation'), the lost-letter technique, and an experiment testing the effects of televised antisocial behavior which, though conducted 30 years ago, remains unique to the present day." The 2003 OCLC Environmental Scan suggests that, paradoxically, a worthy goal of the library might be "invisibility" -- in the sense that the service is ubiquitous and fully integrated into the infosphere. "After all, technology and services are most welcome in our lives when we do not have to devote much thought to them. We press a switch and light comes or goes. Expecting the information consumer to pay attention to the differences between William Shakespeare the author and William Shakespeare the subject as search terms is akin to expecting Joe Householder to know if the red wire or the black wire should be grounded before he plugs the lamp in -- and expect Joe to go to RedWire.com to figure out what happens if he's wrong. Thankfully, clever people have hidden all this technology inside a box and millions are saved from a shocking experience."

Hong Kong: Infernal Affairs

Modern East Asian Cinema Masterpieces -
Hong Kong: Infernal Affairs
06/28/2004 11:12 PM
Although Hong Kong is most known for its kung-fu flicks with flying Chinese à la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and various bullet ballets, it has a long history of varied cinema mostly unknown to us westerners. I was introduced to HK cinema while I lived there in 1999 and quickly grew to love it for its differences from the usual Hollywood fare, its honest portrayal of humanity and unique style of storytelling. Infernal Affairs is the best movie set in modern times to come out of Hong Kong since John Woo's A Bullet In the Head. This truly brilliant masterpiece is near-perfect. And as a fresh reminder of HK cinema's versatility Infernal Affairs is not a kung-fu movie nor a bullet ballet: it's a taut psychological thriller with little action, lots of heart and professionalism, and cast which will make you come back for more.
