California Regulators Inadvertently Give
VoIP A Boost

California Regulators Inadvertently Give
VoIP A Boost
09/24/2004 03:15 AM
California regulators have agreed to let SBC raise the prices they charge to competitors who lease their lines for local telephone service. SBC can now charge $2.60 more per line. In turn, those other providers are all planning to increase their own prices $4 or $5, though no one seems to explain why they need to raise their rates twice as high as the increase in cost. SBC isn't happy because they claim this rate increase still doesn't cover their costs, and they want it to be even higher. Of course, what they don't seem to want to admit is that the higher this rate goes, the faster it's going to push people to VoIP. Apparently, no one at SBC has been noticing just how cheap VoIP services are these days. As traditional phone service gets more expensive and VoIP gets cheaper it doesn't take much for people to start to question why they're paying more than twice as much for phone service than what someone else appears to be offering (often with more features). Most people don't care about whether it's VoIP or traditional phone service. They just see the same features at a cheap price as their phone bill keeps rising, and the choice is easy.

Are iPod Minis Actually Maxi?

Are iPod Minis Actually Maxi? 01/05/2005 03:55 PM

ipod.jpgSometimes things are bigger than we think they are: space, that taco platter I tried to eat last night... and perhaps we can add iPod minis to that list. Ipoditude and Apple Insider float a rumor that people who are now ordering the 4 gig mini are actually getting 5 gigs, and that the 5 gig announcement will come next week.

Strangely, 1 gig is exactly the amount of bad downloaded mash-up I have in my iPod, so the extra memory would be delightful... if a little odd as a business practice.

Nanowires with built-in transistors

Nanowires with built-in transistors 07/01/2004 12:27 PM
For several years now, researchers around the world have fashioned tiny nanowires from carbon nanotubes. Now though, Harvard University nanotech pioneer Charles Lieber and his team have made a nanowire--10,000 times thinner than a sheet of paper--that contains a string of transistors. While traditional nanowires are notoriously difficult to connect with each other or conventional silicon electronics, Lieber's nanocircuits are essentially pre-wired. The work was reported in the journal Nature and summarized in an article on the magazine's Web site:
"At this stage the chain does not actually do anything useful. 'But it's an important proof of principle,' says Lieber. He says that by applying a more elaborate mask to a woven network of silicon nanowires it should be possible to create complex circuits in one go.

To prove his point, he hopes to make a much more sophisticated structure that can perform complex calculations. 'We're trying to make a programmable series of literally thousands of these transistors.'

Taiwan Authorities Suspend Workshop Dealing with Fake AMD Chips. Local authorities on Friday suspended a workshop that made fake, or remarked, AMD microprocessors in Taipei, Taiwan, and seized unprecedented number of chips of nearly one million units.

A report over Sin Chew Daily web-site claims the local police had discovered a workshop that remarked microprocessors made by Advanced Micro Devices to sell them at higher price-points. It is unclear, which chips have been attempted to counterfeit and whether the chips were also somehow modified. Source for the processors the swindlers used is also unknown. At least one man is reported to have been arrested and accused of illegal handicraft.
