09/08/2004 11:00 AMDuring the past 20 years, the Hardware Group at Microsoft has studied
the changing needs of its customers and responded with new
technologies and innovations that have improved people's PC
experiences worldwide. Whether it's the ability to more easily
navigate documents using a scroll wheel to longer battery life via
optical technology or a more comfortable overall experience through
applied ergonomics, the work done in the labs and design studios at
Microsoft has transformed the way people interact with their computers
in powerful new ways.

08/13/2004 03:41 AMDisgusted by the high stress and often poorly managed Seattle area
software industry, Zan Oliphant left corporate America in September of
2003 to form a new company called Zanware – a play on his name. The
company was founded to create a line of products that provide a low
cost, generic, and simple interface to remotely located computers
running the Windows, Linux, and Macintosh operating systems. Zanware
is currently seeking funding for volume production of its products.

10/30/2003 12:34 PMJust as it looked as though Microsoft's antitrust wrangles were almost
settled, the company is facing yet another probe in Europe over its
hardware licensing policies. Earlier this week, the software giant
managed to settle six of its US cases – brought by five states and
the District of Columbia on behalf of consumers – which were based
on antitrust and pricing complaints, lightening the Gates company
wallet to the tune of around $200m.

05/10/2004 07:04 PMNews.com reports that Microsoft will cancel its entire broadband
wireless product line: News.com says they received confirmation this
afternoon of an earlier story that Microsoft's broadband networking
line-up will be supported, but no longer developed. The company will
apparently run down existing inventory. It will continue support
through a two-year warranty period. Microsoft was late in bringing
802.11g gear to market, but has always received high marks in the ease
of configuring their equipment and enabling security. Its primary
consumer operating system competitor, Apple, continues to have a
disproportionate marketshare in selling their AirPort Extreme
(802.11g) equipment despite a cost that is two to three times
comparable equipment from Linksys and similar manufacturers....

Microsoft launch new line of Hardware
products
09/08/2004 09:14 AMMicrosoft's hardware division, unlike some of its others, has rarely
received criticism for the products they release. Always slick, always
working well, Microsoft have always done their Hardware well. Today,
Microsoft are updating the line with a variety of newly designed
models.
The main element to the update is the addition of finger print
technology. Tried by other hardware makers, the technology hasn't
really had much attention asides from high-end, security critical
systems; with backing from a big player (the player?) the technology
could go mainstream. Microsoft are integrating the technology into
their hardware and software solutions, allowing users to give prints
rather than passwords. A good move, increasing security and decreasing
hassle for end users, as well as being pretty cool. No doubt, a
popular addition to the hardware line. You can get the reader as a
stand alone device (see screenshots below), or on an Optical Desktop
with Fingerprint Reader, or finally on a Wireless IntelliMouse
Explorer with Fingerprint Reader.
Microsoft have never had a specific product out for mobile users mouse
wise; they've changed this with the new line up. A cleverly designed
wireless optical mouse with a receiver that snaps away when not in
use. Microsoft claim to have 3 yards (~ 1 metre) range, which is
probably sufficient for most situations. They also claim to give users
3 months of usage on one set of batteries, a big increase on current /
previous wireless mices - this claim is made across the range of new
mice, and one would congratulate the hardware team if they've pulled
it off; Many users are deterred from wireless products due to the cost
of having to replace batteries regularly.
Elsewhere, they've redesigned the keyboards with better curves, new
buttons, and of course, finger print readers. The new models claim to
have 6 months life before needing a battery check up - no too shabby.
Further, the Wireless Optical Desktop and the new Digital Media Pro
Keyboard feature a new Zoom Slider that lets users quickly and easily
zoom in and out of images and documents. Talking of sliders, the new
range of mice all feature the '4 directional' mouse wheels (
tilt wheel technology) that Microsoft
introduced last year, allowing you to scroll left / right as well as
up / down. The Bluetooth option is similar in design, and is
functional with other Bluetooth enabled devices up to 10 metres away.
It also works as a Bluetooth base station.
All in all, a pretty good new line up. Microsoft have added some new
features and have updated designs to keep them competitive with
other vendors. We'll take a look at some of
the new gear closer up, later in the year. The products will be
available in 2005; for estimated prices click "read

I like my iBook. Its name is Snowy. Here’s what it’s
missing:
- A way to easily disable the caps lock key, for those of us whose
large clumsy hands keep hitting it by mistake.
- Better yet, no caps lock at all: for such a rarely-used key it
takes up inordinate space on the keyboard. You could lock and unlock
caps by hitting Shift twice, no?
- A low-wattage FM transmitter, so audio can be played through a
home stereo without mucking with jacks and cables.
- Somewhere else for the CPU. Even with
ample circulation the heat
buildup under the heel of my left hand is annoying.
- Better access to the function keys. I’m roughly four times
more interested in using f-keys than I am in Exposé or adjusting
volume or screen brightness, yet I have to use a combination of keys
to get to them.
- A full stop/period/dot/whatever that doesn’t require the
shift key (particular to AZERTY keyboards
but a pain nonetheless).
- The ability to close the screen without it going to sleep, so it
can operate as an unobtrusive stereo component, server, downloader,
whatever.
- It should sense whenever I enter the room and immediately begin
playing Back in Black by AC/DC.
Just wanted to get that out.

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PM
Today at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.
