Introducing his iPod User’s Guide, the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg writes, “By all accounts, millions of people will buy or receive Apple Computer’s iPod digital-music players this holiday season. The gadgets are beautifully designed and simple to operate, which is one reason they’re so popular, even after three years on the market and despite a rising number of competitors.” [Dec 15]

piPod_Intro.jpg imageAttention iPod-owning pizza lovers in New York: Your prayers have been answered. There is finally an iPod-based guide to New York pizzerias, the piPod. Available free from SliceNy, the reference tool fits in the Notes folder and focusses on Manhattan and Brooklyn, but I sort of get the impression that they might be willing to take some submissions from dough-eaters in Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. There's even within the rating system a way to tell if the oven is coal-fired or not.

Free pizza, or at least the hope of free
pizza

Free pizza, or at least the hope of free
pizza
03/14/2005 04:38 PM
College kids these days have lots of things we didn’t have when I was in college—computers, the web, iPods, massive credit card debt—but we had one thing they don’t: if pizza wasn’t delivered in 30 minutes or less, it was free.

On any weekend night—okay, any night really since I attended a liberal arts college and I tended to hang out with people who weren’t exactly model students (I don’t think there were any, actually)—we’d have a small quantity of money to spend on beer and pizza. If the pizza was free, that meant more money for beer.

The amount of beer you could get for the price of a pizza was significant.

It was still the Cold War then, with the possibility of nuclear war and all that. But it was not a time without hope: there was always the hope of free pizza.

Of course, eventually they figured out that pizza delivery drivers were getting into accidents too often, so they got rid of the free pizza policy.

To this day I’m still a little let down whenever I order pizza and they tell me it will be there in “about 45 minutes” or whatever. Oh, man, where’s the fun in “about 45 minutes.” And what if it comes in 50 minutes? Nothing special.

On the other hand, these days I eat Pagliacci’s instead of Domino’s. Seattle-ites, you know what I’m saying.

A Passion for Pizza

A Passion for Pizza 07/05/2004 11:02 AM
I have decided that pizza is the perfect food, loved the world over. Done correctly, it includes most of the food groups according to Apache Pizza; cheese, meat, veggies and bread. Someone once said of pizza, "Pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's still pretty good." Being USian , I'm without time to create my own dough, squash my own tomatoes, or kill my own cow to create a truly mad pizza. There are alternatives in the quest for the pizza of world domination, though.

Hungry for some pizza, but can't stand all that pesky human interaction you have to put up with ordering it on the phone? Pizza Party is your answer:

Pizza Party is a free text based software package for ordering pizza, or for throwing pizza parties.

Pizza Party has many features to make ordering pizza easy:

* Can order pizza with only a few keystrokes.
* Can save pizza preferences.
* Can use batch files for ordering many pizzas.
* Has easy to use flags for ordering different toppings.
* Runs on most UNIX-like operating systems.
* Supports most currently popular topings like "mushrooms", and "pepperoni"!
* Unattended / background operation.
* Pizza Party is distributed under the GNU General Public License.

Since it's released under the GPL, does that mean I have to share my pizza too?

ACLU Pizza memeflow 02/01/2005 08:52 PM
A couple of days ago my sister cc'd me on the ACLU Pizza movie -- a digital identity nightmare done as a Flash animation. "Very interesting," she wrote to her friends, "and probably not too far from the truth." I'd seen this movie a while back, so I pondered for a moment about the ongoing effect it might be having and then moved on. Then today it came back to me, via Phil Windley, via Kim Cameron, via Future Salon. I wondered how this particular meme has been flowing through the collective mind. So I took a picture of that: ...

I love this: the state of Missouri is using pizza delivery lists to track down people that owe court-imposed fines.
David Coplen, the state office's budget director, said he discovered that pizza delivery lists are one of the best sources such companies use to locate people. "There are literally millions of dollars of uncollected fines, fees and court costs out there," Coplen said. [...] Databases compiled by private companies and government agencies are a key tool for firms such as ACS, Coplen said, and "one of the databases they find to be most helpful are pizza delivery databases." "When you call to order a pizza, you usually give them your correct name, your correct address and your correct phone number," he said.
Moral of the story: if you owe money to the court, use a pseudonym when ordering pizza. Link (Via IP)

Funky Pyramid Dual Arm iMac G5 Patent

Funky Pyramid Dual Arm iMac G5 Patent 08/30/2004 04:03 PM

If the new G5 iMac has a goofy pyramid base, I'm going to flip out and assault Cupertino with my own army of samurai industrial designers. This image was included in a patent application filed on the 24th, which means it came out in the public eye today. My guess is that we'll see the dual-arm iMac, but not with that base. It looks like an old cartoon freeweight, for crissakes! Of course, the other option is that Apple dropped this into the stream just to screw with our heads.

Oh, if you want a gigantor version of the image, you may click at your leisure. (Thanks, Ion!)

A tiny camera providing 'Funky Security for Junior Citizens,' the Juju communicates with the Ministry of Homeland Security via satellite, keeping our kids aware of the nation's threat alert levels, and allowing them to photograph suspicious activity, especially that of the brown and bearded, according to the delightfully illustrated 'How Does Your Juju work?' page.

It's fake, I know, and maybe a little bit old, but I just now noticed it, so bite me. (Thanks, Frank!)

At left: what the museum's proprieters promote as "Japan's only live horse sex show," which visitors soon discover is no more than a faux herd of weird livestock mannequins knocking bovine boot in front of some equally weird human mannequins.
