Manager
06/23/2004 11:52 PM
Somebody asked me today why Windows XP doesn't have something like Mac OS X's Keychain: a secure, systemwide store for names and passwords. And then I remembered, dimly, that it does -- sort of. When XP came out, all the feature lists mentioned Credential Manager, which uses the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) to do something that sounds just like what the OS X Keychain does. On XP, you get to the Credential Manager like so: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage my Network Passwords. ...

Anime keychain drives

Anime keychain drives 07/22/2004 02:31 AM
Gizmodo has the scoop on a line of Gundam-branded USB keychain drives.
To appeal to the "maniacs" (Japanese for "someone who knows too much,") IO Data has included two features for collectors of the drives - and I'm not making this up - by installing the included "Cute" software, your desktop wallpaper will automatically change to a corresponding Gundam wallpaper. When you take it out, it will go back to normal. The second feature is the screensaver, which when you purchase and use more than one of these drives, will add the respective characters to the ensuing action. You too can engage in intergalactic space combat for about $55 USD for a USB 2.0 mecha, or $45 for a USB 1.1 mecha.

This Japanese company is selling glowing rubber duckie USB keychain drives. Capacity caps out at 16MB -- someone should make a 1GB version of this. That plays MIDI jingles. And has a fingerprint-reader-based encryption scheme. You would be the coolest kid in the Internet cafe when you plugged in your fingerprint-reading lightup singing duckie and used it to transfer your ssh keypair-halves to gain acess to your cage. Seriously. Link (via Gizmodo)

08/05/2004 10:52 AM

spinuser_ie.jpg image"Spin" is a persistence-of-vision keychain prototype that, when spun through the air like, say, a lasso, displays a clock face in the air. There are even three different display modes, including an 'analog' mode that displays a highlighted arc of the circle, with the leading edge indicating the current hour and the trailing edge indicating minutes.

There is talk of this design being picked up and mass produced by a couple of different companies; make that happen, boys, because I want it.

Voice? Who Needs Voice?

Voice? Who Needs Voice? 05/24/2004 03:05 AM
While the telecom industry struggles over issues about whether or not they're losing voice revenue to mobile phones and VoIP systems (even as they try to offer those services themselves), some are beginning to wonder if the whole concept of vo ice communications is losing much of its appeal. Now, obviously, it's never going to go away completely - and there are plenty of reasons why it's nice to actually hear the voice of the person you're communicating with - but increasingly communications that were traditionally done by voice are now being done by email, instant message, SMS text message or even by the web. So, no matter how hard the telcos fight over how the voice market proceeds, it could be a dwindling market. That's not to say the telcos aren't making a big push into data as well - it's just to note that the "cash cow" of voice that they all treasure could have a shorter lifespan than they expect.

Voice over IP. Or not. 12/12/2003 03:07 PM
Sounds like VoIP has hit the mainstream--there were stories both on All Things Considered and Marketplace last night and, while NPR isn't quite Fox News (Something I'm very happy about) it's a lot more mainstream than slashdot. VoIP is the next big thing in phone service, or so you'd think. And, to an extent, it is. I know how the phone system is set up now (My dad worked for AT&T for decades) and it's a marvel in some ways. Phone systems, as they stand now, are circuit-switched networks, that is when you make a call to someone else there's...

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP 08/31/2004 03:07 PM

Information has come out about Nintendo's upcoming DS handheld's ability to serve as a voice-over-IP handset, allowing DS gamers to make phone calls when connected to a Wi-Fi access point. There's no word if the service will allow DS users to call other, regular phones or not. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably more likely that DS users will be able to chat to other DS users, and not serve as an actual phone. (Thanks, John!)
