PocketDock-LineOut-Combo.jpg imageSendStation, the people who make the tiny PocketDock for the iPod have announced two new models, the PocketDock Combo, which allows iPod owners to use standard USB and FireWire cables to connect their dock-compatible iPods to their PCs (instead of using Apple's cables) and the PocketDock Line Out, which includes both the standard FireWire and an eighth-inch stereo jack which feeds signal directly out of the iPods line-out port (instead of the amplified headphone jack at the top). The PocketDock Combo can be had for $23, while the Line Out can be had for $30. Simple, cheap, easy. Nicely done.

06/21/2004 01:46 PM
SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

Wi-Fi/Cell Phone Combo Requires 802.11a

Wi-Fi/Cell Phone Combo Requires 802.11a 05/28/2004 05:08 PM
Avaya, Motorola, and Proxim combine on a handset that talks Wi-Fi in an enterprise and cell elsewhere--but only the 802.11a flavor of Wi-Fi: Requiring the use of 802.11a is an interesting choice, because it avoids many of the interference, latency, and dropped packet issues present in using an overtaxed, QoS-free 802.11b/g network. With 802.11a, you could conceivably devote several in-building channels to voice or have a sufficient density and overlap of coverage that you wouldn't suffer from bandwidth lacks. One analyst quoted in the story suggests that enterprises will eventually all use 802.11a, but I'd like to see some evidence of that. A number of vendors sell a/g equipment for the enterprise, and I've seen no information on an upswing in dual-radio adoption. A more compelling option for 802.11a is via products that have multiple radios or multiple channels in a single box, such as products powered by Engim's chipset. In that model, because each access point could have several hundred Mbps of actual throughput through bonded or standalone channels, it would be worth deploying the denser installation required by 802.11a. 802.11b and g have substantial limits on total system speed because of their staggered and overlapping channels....

It's a 192kHz-compatible 2U rack-mountable hardware device that can accurately emulate every microphone pre-amp (mic-pre) and compressor combination in history, according to the company. It comes with 40 mic-pre replicas and 40 classic compressor replicas that you can mix and match, with the ability to store the results in one of 100 memory slots. Additional replicas can be downloaded from the Liquid Channel Web site. You can control up to eight Liquid Channel units remotely with Focusrite's Liquid Control application; a USB port on the back of the device plugs into your Mac. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher, USB 1.1 or 2.0 and 5MB of hard drive space. The suggested price is US$3,495.

imageLG's MF-SE 430 just barely crossed the line between "something to report on" and "another boring MP3 player," but all is well that ends well. The system consists of two speakers and a subwoofer, where you can directly insert the MP3 player itself. This is pretty good convergence if you ask me, but I'm really too open-minded about stuff like this. Also, judging by the pics, the speakers are flat panel types. Price and essentially anything else is unknown, but it's not like something like this will ever exit LG's homeland.

Who Cares About Sound Quality?

Who Cares About Sound Quality? 01/26/2004 03:29 AM
It seems that the focus on in-home entertainment devices has moved from the stereo system to the home theater system. However, this change of focus from the audio to the visual means that many buyers are skipping out on the fancier speaker systems - much to the dismay of those who sell such speakers. Even though home theater systems require a complex setup of speakers to produce optimal sound, some are worried that many buyers are too focused on the picture they get from the screen, and thus only buy the cheapest speakers to handle the sound. Of course, they're working to change this perception. Though, there are some odd ideas - including "tactile audio" where the speakers end up embedded in the furniture of the room itself. This way, the viewer can actually "feel" the sound relate to whatever they're watching in the home theater.

At $300, the SoundDock is more expensive than competing systems. However, it's currently the best sounding of the all-in-one speaker systems we've tested, and its uncluttered elegance and ease of use make it an appealing offering for those willing to plunk down the change. By Dan Frakes, Macworld

They're not the only ones, but the latest to jump on the "shutter noise" solution to the "camera phone problem" is South Korea. Starting next year, they're going to require new camera phones to include a loud clicking sound when someone takes a picture, mimicking an analog camera. The only purpose for such a noise, of course, is to alert people around you that you're taking a picture. In some ways, this seems silly, and down the road people will look back on this and find it an amusing historical example of people over reacting to new technology.

The Empty Cradle: global population

The Empty Cradle: global population
decline
06/06/2004 05:42 PM
The Empty Cradle. Our everyday personal experiences with traffic, sprawl and other irritants of modern life tell us there are too many people in the world and the problem is getting worse. However in truth world population growth peaked 40 years ago in 1963 and has been trending downward since. Demographers predict that absolute human population will peak at 9 billion by 2070 and then contract. Long before then, many nations will shrink in absolute size and the av erage age of the world's citizens will shoot up dramatically, including the fastest aging part of the world: developing countries, where for example Iraq is aging 2.5 times faster than the USA and Mexico 5 times as fast. Having averted the danger of overpopulation, the world now faces the opposite problem: an aging and declining population.
