Source: Web searchers could more easily zero in on relevant images, audio clips and video files if consumers made use of radio buttons, a technology literally at their fingertips, a Penn State researcher has reported....

Forget Radio, Tune In to Net 06/28/2004 05:24 AM
Internet radio services keep getting better and attracting bigger audiences. Digital features like personalization and variety blow away anything on the airwaves. But some of the services are better than others. Katie Dean reviews a few top choices.

GarageBand
07/06/2004 04:56 PM
Tune-Up for GarageBand is a collection of over 500 loops exclusively created in Apple Loop format for use in GarageBand. Unlike many other loop producers we offer a variety of loops, this is probably the nearest thing out there to Apple's own Jam Pack. We want to give users the ability to create whole tracks using our loops rather than just giving them a disc full of drums. Tune-Up Pack 1 is available at just $34.99 including delivery worldwide....an absolute bargain!

Web Searchers Search Around

Web Searchers Search Around 02/17/2004 01:15 PM
Despite conventional wisdom saying that people just use Google for their web searches, a new study suggests that web searchers are not particularly monogamous when it comes to searching. While, yes, most people do use Google, they're not afraid to use other search engines when necessary. Most people tend to use two different search engines on a regular basis. The study suggests that a better search engine doesn't necessarily need to worry so much about prying people away from Google. There's also a ton of people who don't use search at all (who are these people?) - and the study suggests that MSN and Yahoo might want to target these people. On the whole, I'd think that converting a Google searcher may be easier, though, than convincing someone who doesn't bother searching at all why they need to start using a search engine. Still, this does suggest some of the reasons why search engines are suddenly all talking about personalization features to make their search "sticky". If it's customized to you, the theory goes, you'll want to come back. The problem with that theory is that not everyone really wants customized search, and depending on how it's set up, it could end up annoying users more than helping them.

What Do Intranet Searchers Want?

Almost all of the information in an enterprise is unstructured data -- existing in the form of HTML pages, documents in proprietary formats, paper and media objects, etc. As a result, enterprise search differs from Internet search in several important ways. First, on the Internet a user usually seeks the "best" or most relevant document -- whereas on an intranet a searcher is often looking for some specific document that she or he has seen in the past. Second, the Internet reflects the collective voice of many authors -- whereas an intranet typically reflects the view of the organization it serves (and so intranet content is created to disseminate information rather than attract and hold the attention of casual searchers). A third difference is that an Internet search engine is controlled and managed by one organization as a service -- whereas enterprise search software is licensed to and deployed by a variety of organizations in diverse environments, and imposes varying hardware constraints, software platforms, bandwidth, firewalls, heterogeneous content repositories, security models, document formats, user communities, interfaces, and geographic distribution.

Disney asks FCC to lock up all the

Disney asks FCC to lock up all the
record-buttons
08/07/2004 05:31 AM
Digging through some FCC filings, my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann turned up a bit of Disney magic that tips the company's hand: they're planning to lock up everything capable of recording audio.
Well, in their latest comments, Disney (which is an RIAA member, and owns ABC Radio Networks and four record labels) let slip what this is all about:

In addition, to the extent the Commission considers such a content protection mechanism, it should also consider whether to extend that mechanism to all music distribution platforms, including satellite digital audio radio service, the Internet and broadcast radio service.

Got that? Disney wants the FCC to regulate all devices capable of recording from any audio broadcasting medium or from the Internet. FM radio, XM, Sirius, Streamripper, Total Recorder, you're all in the crosshairs. It's the Hollings Bill all over again.

theodp writes "What do you call it when three IE buttons on the Windows Taskbar disappear and are replaced with a single 'group' IE button when you open a fourth IE window? Annoying? Nope. The correct answer is U.S. patent no. 6,756,999, granted to Microsoft Tuesday for a Method and system for clustering and grouping taskbar buttons." Indeed, this is one of the very first things that I make sure to turn off on any Windows box that I end up using.
