Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

09/03/2004 02:40 PMJeremiah writes
"Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing
the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record
level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From
their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for
the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the
prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to
our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40
million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an
American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period
1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If
I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last
nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P.
Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to
cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales.
Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance
company's radio ad: Money
, Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AMMarking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since
the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium,
Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify
daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing
number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the
three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances,
monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time
than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to
the number of American households banking online -- due to its
convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money
2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts
in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate
the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

Saving TiVo

08/30/2004 12:15 PMI'm quoted in this Kin Girard article in this mnth's issue of Business 2.0.
Only problem is - you can't see the entire article unless your

Oh well.
Anyway - here's the opener to the article.
It's been written off by the experts. But thanks to a Silicon
Valley software legend, the company that invented digital video
recording says it's about to change the way we watch TV -- again.
By Kim Girard, September 01, 2004
Obituaries for the nearly departed TiVo Inc. (TIVO) have been
written up for months now, all ready to go when the sad day comes.
They're poignant, these eulogies. There's the part about how feisty
little TiVo created a beloved and revolutionary product -- the digital
video recorder -- on a shoestring. The word TiVo, like Google and
Xerox (XRX) and only a handful of other product names, went on to be
used to describe what the gadget does -- in this case, learning what
you like to watch, recording similar stuff for later viewing, and
allowing you to pause or otherwise time-shift live action. TiVo
promised to transform television, advertising -- hell, the culture
itself, not least by sparing humanity from having to sit through
commercials. Alas, it burned through $567 million between 1999 and
mid-2004, and was run down by huge and ruthless competitors that
mimicked its technology. But take heart, the eulogists conclude: TiVo
will always be with us -- as a verb, if not a company.
There's at least one problem with that scenario, however. His name
is Arthur van Hoff. He's an obscure but revered high priest of
software coding. And he thinks he's devised a way to pull TiVo back
from death's door.
[Business 2.0]
Here's my quote:
" 'Strangeberry works and it's totally cool', says Marc
Canter, co- founder of Web media tool maker Macromedia, who was given
an early view of the technology."
It does. I am. Here comes TiVO - again.
The only question remains - is it pronounced TeeeeeeVOH or TehVoh.
Inquiring minds wanna know.

Saving Energy Without Derision
Saving Energy Without Derision
09/18/2004 01:15 PM
Xeni Jardin:
BoingBoing reader
George W.
Maschke says,
Saving Energy Without Derision (5 mb PDF) is a new (and free) e-book
by former Sandia National Laboratories senior scientist Dr. Alan P. Zelicoff. This book is
intended to be a real-world, no-nonsense, thoroughly documented
collection of easy-to-implement recommendations to help the average
thoughtful person to pick the "low-hanging fruit" of conservation and
renewable energy. The author is after the easy 75% of actions we can
all take (but almost uniformly ignore) that most certainly make a
difference in energy costs (after all that's what most people care
about) and adjuring a bit of unnecessary adverse impact on the
environment (which a few folks actually think is important beyond the
mere dollar valuation).
The author (who welcomes comments at zalan8587@qwest.net) intends to
continuously update the book (consistent with readership interest) and
address many new topics. For example, next on his list is an analysis
of the economics and scientific basis of fuel-cell vehicles powered by
hydrogen. (Bottom line, he maintains, is that it's a cruel hoax and
energy disaster, and far less useful than, for example, heavy hybrid
automobiles that get about 50 - 60 miles on an electric charge alone
-- which accounts for more than 85% of driving in the US and elsewhere
on a daily basis -- and which are available now.)
