Execs Need 'Attitude Adjustment'
"That's the jist of Friday's intera
ctive TV discussion at an advertising conference in Orlando. 'The
consumer has moved. We are the ones who need to catch up,' said
one media buyer. Adds Tim Hanlon, SVP of Starcom Worldwide: "TV today
is less about watching TV than it is about consuming video in
many different environments." Terry Heaton points out that
the definition of "video" should include video games and the Internet.
'Redefining the use of a TV set is the beginning of salvation for
broadcasters.' Heaton said." [Lost Remote]
Which makes you wonder about where libraries fit into the digital
video environment. If 2003 was the year MP3s truly went mainstream so
that even your grandma has heard of them, then 2004 is going to be the
equivalent for video.

Rental madness
Rental madness
08/15/2004 12:01 AMThere was an ad on TV for a bridal fair just a moment ago. It
occurred to me that the bride spends thousands of dollars on a dress
she’ll never wear again but the groom rents his tuxedo, which is
something he’ll have many chances to wear again. That seems
backward to me.
Rental Car GPS Spying!
Rental Car GPS Spying!
04/06/2005 06:18 PMMy buddy and I were driving at a rate of speed in a rental car that
was well above the posted limit a year or two ago. Out of the blue his
cell phone rang and as he talked I noticed he started slowing down.
You guessed it, the rental car agency was calling him saying he was
violating his rental car agreement.
If memory serves me correctly he was charged like $300.00 extra
when we turned the car in. Finally a court has stood up and say you
cannot do this. If your not aware that rental car companies are doing
this you have been so advised. [Techdirt<

Music Rental: Another POV
Music Rental: Another POV
06/01/2004 05:43 AMPeople don't want to rent music, observed Steve Jobs, which is why
there isn't a subscription-based service over at the iTunes Music
Store. And I tend to agree on this point.
But, one of the
"advantage" of the old Napster, a lot of people have also observed, is
the ability to sample and discover new music. And sampling and
discovering new music on the iTunes Music Store, currently, is too
much work. A lot of clicks. A lot of waiting.
Maybe the new iPod
division should invent something like a personalized radio station,
which can be listened via iTunes or iPod. The tunes selection will be
partly based on what the user have on his iTunes library. And, oh, a
30-second preview is simply not enough for discovering new music.
Simply choose the option, "Include iTunes Music Store samples", and
iTunes/iPod will selected previews into your current playlist. Perhaps
even with a text-to-speech announcement. Oh, of course, make it easy
for the user to then buy the tune.

hate westerns. I don't care much for Jodie Foster, either.
The single greatest question troubling mankind at this
time is "What movie should I rent ?". We are here to answer that
question! What to Rent is a website linked to a computer-cluster that
will recommend a movie for you to watch based upon your personality
and the type of film experience you are looking for.
It doesn't require any personal information to create a profile,
not even an email address. And no new password to remember.
Refreshing.

04/05/2005 11:36 PMBob Dole writes
"A few
years ago, it was the latest thing for rental car companies to use
GPS to spy on their customers. Most of these outfits got the hint and
quickly dropped the concept after a torrent of bad publicity. But just
in case any company in Connecticut didn't get the message, the a state Supreme
Court just ruled that no matter how much notice you give, you
can't charge a customer $150 extra just because he was speeding. The
state's attorney general even said, "You cannot secretly track
drivers' speeds and gouge them under the guise of safety or vehicle
expense" -- guess Connecticut isn't getting speed cameras any time
soon. "
