AFP's recent lawsuit against Google is a prime example of why the Google News service is still in "beta." Unfortunately, the "beta" label didn't protect Google from litigation this time.

Google Says Deja's News All Over Again

Google Says Deja's News All Over Again 09/19/2002 03:40 AM

Wow! or Three Reasons You Should Use
Google News

Wow! or Three Reasons You Should Use
Google News
12/23/2002 08:54 AM
Wow! or Three Reasons You Should Use Google News I don't even want to get into the ethics of this one: LONDON -- Britain's High Court has barred a couple from creating a 'designer baby' to try to save the life of their sick child. In a first-of-its-kind ruling, the court said the British Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has no legal power to authorise such a treatment, the Guardian reported. The case was filed by pro-life campaigner Josephine Quintavalle who wanted to stop the 'ethically objectionable' screening of test-tube embryos to provide donor siblings for sick children. The ruling is a blow to Mr Raj Hashmi and his wife Shahana who were given the go-ahead by the HFEA to use embryo selection to try to have a baby matching their sick child's tissue type. [_Go_] For all the hub hub about Google News when it came out, I'm finding it just plain invaluable -- and one of the best "Christmas Presents" of the year. There are three ways in which I'm using it: The Bigger World. When I want to know what's going on out in the wider world. The print Wall Street Journal does a fairly good job for U.S. centric news but its increasingly clear just how U.S. centric that is -- and how unacceptable that is. Google News to the rescue! Following up on stories that leave the news. Remember that Finnish shopping mall that was blown up by a student and how that just magically left the news? Well here's the latest -- they want to use it for Internet censorshp: [_Go_] What People Talk About. Ever have one of those experiences where people say "Did you see what was on 20/20 (or the news) last night -- where XYZ?" And you say "No". And then you walk away and forget about it. Now I just "Google News" for it. And it's amazing not only that a) they weren't lying to you and b) where you see stories covered -- often in the smallest of papers, NOT in the "mainstream media". As an example, someone mentioned to me that "The Air Force is giving pilots speed and they shot down Canadians". What !!!! So I just did a quick query and got this: When the two were sent on their mission over Afghanistan and Iraq, the Air Force gave them $30 million F-16 fighter jets, laser-guided precision munitions, state-of-the-art technology, and something that came as a complete surprise -- amphetamines. Amphetamines, a prescription drug, are known on the street as uppers or speed. Yet, a 20/20 investigation has found, the amphetamines, the speed pills, are now standard issue to U.S. Air Force combat pilots, to help them stay awake on long combat sorties. ... Yet not only is the Air Force making the amphetamines widely available to combat pilots, it also has informed them they could be considered unfit to fly certain missions if they don't voluntarily take the amphetamines. [_Go_] Commentary: In another article on the amphetamine issue I saw a doctor make the comment that "the standard warning of these type of pills is 'don't operate heavy machinery' when taking them." Are planes heavy? Google News versus Your News Aggregator So there you have it, three reasons why you should use Google News. To me the debate about Google News versus a News Aggregator just is silly -- they're different. Google News is about the broader world while your News Aggregator is about your world.

Inside Google News

Inside Google News 06/05/2005 11:34 PM

I just heard an excellent presentation by Krishna Bharat of Google News. He explained how Google News works. It basically crawls news sites, finds "story clusters", ranks the sources, figures out how prominently each source is running the story, figures out whether its a big story or a little story, figures out geographic references, and builds the pages for the various geographic and language editions. He was talking to an audience of editors so there were many questions about how the "editing" process worked and many people couldn't seem to believe it was algorithmic. Some people seemed afraid that Google News would replace them. The point that he made and was clear from the process that he explained is that it uses the decisions that the editors of the various media make about what story to run and where in deciding how important a story was. It was basically aggregating the decisions of the editors, not replacing them. Without the editors and the "fr ont page process" Google News couldn't decide what story to lead with. At least in its current form.

The derivative conclusion you can come to is that Google News is just amplifying or reinforcing systemic biases in MSM editorial and NOT helping to address these issues. I think this make Google News very news media friendly and also provides an opportunity for bloggers and projects like Global Voices to still have a very important role. I guess that if Google New started incorporating more of the alternative press, they could shift the bias.

During the discussion, Dan Gillmor pressed Krishna for more transparency on the algorithm and the list of sources and I seconded the motion.

Some good notes of the sessions on the editors blog.

Google News Updates

Google News Updates 10/03/2002 01:42 PM
Google has updated their search appliance line. The appliance now supports searching password-protected content, and only gives users access to content for which they know the password. They've also added the same "fast update" technology we've seen recently on the real Google. "A fast changing top layer for important documents, updated hourly, and a larger, base layer that can be updated every day." which confirms my speculation on how Google's update system worked. Finally, they've increased capacity and introduced a new mid-range GB-5005 (a cluster of 5 Google search appliances) which can handle 150 queries a minute. Google announced that their search results and ads will be featured in the Infospace network (including Excite, Dogpile, WebCrawler, MetaCrawler and InfoSpace). News.com has an interesting opinion column about the new Google News, commenting that Google's computer-driven system gives a more interesting and varied look at the news than one that involved hand-picking by editors. (Thanks, Arcadi!) And over on Google Groups, some users are complaining that Google isn't fully archiving their groups. Does anyone know anything about this? There's been more discussion in google.public.support.general but no response. (Thanks, Michael!)...
